UMass students nosh on 6,700-pound seafood stew
AMHERST, Mass.
The University of Massachusetts again has welcomed students back to campus with a world record-breaking culinary treat.
A year after starting the semester with a 2-ton stir fry, staff and students at the Amherst campus Monday made and chowed down on a nearly 6,700-pound seafood stew.
The stew was prepared in the same custom-built, 14-foot pan used to make the stir fry last year. The stew included 1,000 pounds of mussels, lobster, clams, haddock and salmon from sustainable sources in New England and Alaska.
It also contained 1,725 pounds of half-and- half, 1,137 pounds of potatoes, 575 pounds of onions and 145 pounds of bacon, among other ingredients.
Ken Toong, executive director of auxiliary services, says only vegetables from local farmers and the school’s student-run garden were used.
Police: Buffalo man tried to eat bogus $50 bills
DARIEN, N.Y.
Authorities say a 35-year-old man tried to swallow several counterfeit $50 bills after he was caught trying to use the bogus money at a western New York amusement park.
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to Darien Lake Theme Park and Resort on Sunday night after Larry Jones of Buffalo bought french fries with a $50 bill.
Deputies say a park employee determined the bill was counterfeit and called security. While being taken away, deputies say Jones stuffed five counterfeit bills into his mouth and tried to eat them.
Security officers retrieved the bills before Jones swallowed them.
Jones was charged with possessing a forged instrument and tampering with evidence and sent to the county jail with no bail.
Minn. casino cooks up record 1-ton cheeseburger
CARLTON, Minn.
A Minnesota casino has cooked up a world-record bacon cheeseburger that’s 10 feet in diameter and weighs more than a ton.
The behemoth burger was served up Sunday at the Black Bear Casino Resort near Carlton. It tipped the scales at 2,014 pounds.
Guinness Records representative Philip Robertson verified the record for biggest burger. He called the feat a result of “remarkable teamwork” and said the burger “actually tastes really good.”
A Duluth News Tribune report says the previous mark was a mere 881 pounds, 13 ounces.
Black Bear’s burger included 60 pounds of bacon, 50 pounds of lettuce, 50 pounds of sliced onions, 40 pounds of pickles and 40 pounds of cheese.
It took about four hours to cook the patty. A crane was used to flip it.
