Businessmen band together to build new vets post in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — A group of local businessmen has stepped forward to demolish the American Legion Post 472 at 323 E. Indianola Ave., and replace it with a handicapped-accessible new building on the same site this fall.

The work begins Oct. 2, and the group, known as Core 6, hopes the new building can be completed for the 105-member post in 45 days.

The current building is more than a century old, and its second-floor meeting room is not handicapped accessible.

The announcement was made today by the businessmen after the post said in July it was launching a $50,000 to $60,000 Road to Remembrance fundraising campaign for an addition that would contain a barrier-free, ground-level meeting room and two handicapped-accessible restrooms.

The new handicapped-accessible, ranch-style building will feature a large meeting room, a commercial kitchen and bedrooms for veterans needing social services.
