Scrappers’ late rally spoiled by wild pitch

Staff report

JAMESTOWN, N.Y.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ two-out, three-run comeback in the top of the ninth inning went for naught Monday when the Jamestown Jammers used a walk-off wild pitch to win, 6-5, in New York-Penn League play.

The Scrappers trailed the Jammers, 5-2, and were down to their last out when an improbable rally began with an Andrew Campbell single to left field. Richard Stock followed with a double to right to put runners at second and third. Jorge Martinez drove both home with a ground-rule double to center as the Scrappers cut the deficit to one run, 5-4.

Martinez scored to tie the game on Robel Garcia’s single to right.

The celebration didn’t last. The Jammers’ Juancito Martinez tripled to right field leading off the bottom of the inning against Mahoning Valley reliever Rafael Homblert. Moments later — with Yefri Perez batting — Jamestown’s Martinez scored the winning run when Homblert threw a wild pitch.

Joe Wendle singled twice and drove in a run for the Scrappers (30-43), raising his team-leading batting average to .327.

But Wendle — playing third base — had two of the Scrappers’ three errors, which led to three unearned runs for Jamestown (33-40).

The Scrappers open a two-game, season-ending series at State College at 7:05 tonight.
