Fugitive surrenders at northwestern Pa. pub
EMPORIUM, Pa. (AP) — Police say a fugitive wanted in the kidnapping of a bank employee last month in northwestern Pennsylvania has been taken into custody after they surrounded a bar where he was spotted.
Emporium police said they surrounded the Allegany Pub on Monday night and took 58-year-old Thomas Edward Smith into custody after he called out to them and said he wanted to surrender. Smith was arraigned on kidnapping and other charges, and was jailed in Potter County.
Police allege he was upset over a foreclosure and kidnapped a Citizens & Northern Bank employee Aug. 8 by pretending he needed a ride because his car supposedly broke down. Instead, he allegedly ordered the woman to drive to the bank at gunpoint. But she refused and jumped from her moving vehicle.
