Recycling department offering waste-reduction seminar in Sharon

Staff report

SHARON, PA.

The Lawrence-Mercer Recycling/Solid Waste Department is offering a free waste-reduction seminar for businesses, institutions, municipalities and interested individuals from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce, 41 Chestnut Ave.

Megan Gahring, Mercer County’s recycling coordinator, said this is a great opportunity to learn about waste reduction and how it can save businesses and homeowners energy and money.

The seminar topics include recycling, waste reduction, energy conservation, procurement savings and regulatory compliance.

Misconceptions, myths and challenges that exist regarding recycling will be discussed at the seminar, as well as the environmental and economic benefits of having a recycling program.

Reducing the amount of waste a workplace is generating by diverting materials such as cardboard and office paper to recycling is one simple way to “green” a business. Other ways to green your business or home also will be presented.

Simple changes in technology usage and behavior, especially in an electronic era, can collectively have a big impact on energy consumption rates and your utility bill.

Investing in energy conservation can save money.

The seminar is open to everyone.

Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP with the Lawrence-Mercer Recycling/Solid Waste Department by 4 p.m. Thursday by calling 724-658-6925 or emailing recycling@co.lawrence.pa.us.

This seminar is offered annually throughout Lawrence and Mercer counties.

An additional seminar this year will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 16 at the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce in New Castle.
