Staff report
Slippery Rock, Pa.
The Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, is hosting an Outdoor Adventure Workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Sunday, where participants age 12 and older will discover how to “GO Orienteering!”
Orienteering is an exciting sport that involves using a map and compass over various terrain to find hidden “control points.” Originally an exercise for the military, the sport originated in the Scandinavian countries in the 19th century. In the United States, clubs across the country host orienteering events and competitions throughout the year. During the workshop, participants will cover basic map, navigation and compass skills, tips for success, plus time on a basic orienteering course.
A free registration is required by Thursday. Interested parties may call the center at 724-794-6011 or visit www.dcnr.state.pa.us/Calendar/ to claim their spot.
If the event sparks an interest, participants are urged to attend the Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club’s celebration of National Orienteering Day on Sept. 16. The club will host a special event at Deer Lakes Park, 1090 Baileys Run Road, Tarentum, Pa., aimed at beginners in the sport. More information on that event can be found at www.wpoc.org/.
