‘Common Ground’ is theme
youngstown
“Common Ground” is the theme that St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., is using to achieve a mix of multicultural music and traditions with the parish’s weekly Sunday morning Mass.
On the second Sunday of each month, St. Patrick celebrates a bi-lingual, English/Spanish Mass with select readings in both Spanish and English.
The music is also a reflection of Spanish and English as refrains and responses are sung in both languages.
Local Hispanic musician, Phil Gonzalez, and Santa Rosa de Lima choir and St. Patrick choir assist.
The parish also is incorporating African-American music into the Mass with the help of jazz pianist and vocalist Howard Howell. He is assisting music director Kris Harper with Gospel music rooted in the African-American tradition. A newly formed Gospel choir will sing periodically throughout the church year. The choir debuted at a recent Mass that included African-American music chosen in connection with the feast days of St. Monica and St. Augustine, early saints from Africa.
