Man to be charged in Warren standoff during TV reposession

Staff report

WARREN

Police plan to charge a man in his early 20s who held police at bay for 40 minutes Monday afternoon at a house in the 100 block of Kenmore Avenue Northeast.

Police were called to the home, which is just off of East Market Street, after a 44-year-old Youngstown woman reported that the man fired a gun at her from inside the house at 2:28 p.m.

The woman said she had gone to the house to repossess a television for Vernon’s Sales & Rental on Youngstown Road and talked with a male inside who would not give her the television, so she threatened to file a complaint with the court.

As the woman was backing up in her van, she heard a gunshot and saw something hit her van windshield near her face. Then she heard several more projectiles hitting the van and saw a man holding a gun out of the upstairs window.

Police blocked off roads in the area while trying to talk to the suspect over a megaphone and on the telephone. Detective Doug Hipple was called to the scene to serve as negotiator.

No injuries were reported. The weapon used was later determined to be a pellet gun, said Sgt. Jeff Cole, a police spokesman.

The man was released to his family.
