City’s police department gets grant funding

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Office of Criminal Justice Services has awarded $36,352.87 in federal traffic safety funding to the Youngstown Police Department.

Police Chief Rod Foley announced the news Monday, saying the funding will be for the current fiscal year.

”This additional funding will assist our agency in enforcing traffic regulations on streets where the highest amount of accidents occur,” Foley said. “Based on crash data, speed, impaired driving, and seat-belt use are a priority for Youngstown. We are happy to receive these grant funds from the state to address this safety issue.”

Crash data shows crashes related to speed or impaired driving caused 23 fatalities in Youngstown over the three-year period between 2008 and 2010. To reduce these numbers, the department will be conducting high- visibility enforcement, working overtime in selected areas.

The funds are passed through OCJS from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support the efforts of safety partners statewide and focus on traffic safety priority areas such as restraint use, impaired driving, motorcycle safety and youthful drivers.
