Area Girl Scouts, Goodwill team up for Good Turn Day

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries and Girl Scouts in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties are teaming up for a Good Turn Day donation drive Saturday.

Goodwill Industries’ donation centers in Austintown, Boardman, Calcutta, Liberty, Salem and Warren are participating.

Girl Scouts earn a patch by collecting three bags of re-saleable clothing and household items from friends, family and neighbors, and then donating these items to one of the participating donation centers on Good Turn Day.

The Scout, or her troop, must register in advance to participate.

To register, a parent or troop leader must contact Goodwill’s marketing office at 330-759-7921, ext. 1207, with their troop number, donation center location, and number of girls participating. Some 260 girls are registered to date.

Good Turn Day not only provides Girl Scouts with the opportunity to earn a patch, but to give back to their community.

The processing of their donations helps provide job training and employment, while the sale of these donated items provide funding for programs and services for individuals with disabilities or other barriers to employment in the community, said Erika Parker, Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries marketing director.

Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries employs and provides vocational rehabilitation services to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment helping them to become independent, tax-paying members of the community.

Also provided are radio-reading and various other social services.
