1960: A chartered plane carrying the California Polytechnic State University football team crashes on takeoff from Toledo, Ohio, killing 22 of the 48 people on board.

1987: LTV Corp. reports third quarter profits of $109 million, compared with a net loss of $2 billion in the same quarter a year earlier.

Reading test scores for Youngstown School District elementary students increase by 9.9 percent over two years, bringing them above the national average for the first time in 20 years.

1972: President Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, are greeted by more than 15,000 people jammed into Warren’s Courthouse Square and along Market Street. Youngstown Mayor Jack Hunter estimates there were another 10,000 at the Youngstown Municipal Airport.

Gus Hall, Communist candidate for president, who was an organizer in Youngstown during the Little Steel Strike of 1937, will speak in Schwebel Auditorium at Youngstown State University.

1962: The Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame-Heart Fund Banquet at the Idora Park Ballroom features Waite Hoyt, one-time “Boy Wonder” pitcher of the New York Yankees as the headline speaker. Other Major Leaguers include Bill White, Dean Chance, Bob Rodgers, Bob Friend and Jim Grant.

1937: J.B. Estabrook, general manager of the Sunlight Electrical Division of General Motors, says the corporation will soon build another new large plant in Warren. It will adjoin the Packard Electric plant on Dana Avenue.

A fire in the fur vaults of the G.M. McKelvey Co. causes $1,000 damage and ties up downtown traffic as seven Youngstown fire companies respond to the alarm.
