YOUNGSTOWN schools Grant for $5K will help educate about domestic violence

Youngstown City Schools received a $5,000 grant from The HealthPath Foundation of Ohio to educate its work force about domestic violence.

The district will partner with Tri-County Family Violence Prevention Coalition to educate, target and provide information and support to employees affected by domestic- violence issues.

“Our work force is 68 percent female, and statistics show that 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence; however, our program will be open to all employees,” said Karen Green, assistant superintendent in charge of the Human Resources Department and coordinator of the program.

Domestic violence and abuse is not limited to obvious physical violence and can include endangerment, kidnapping, trespassing and stalking.

Alcohol consumption and mental illness can be associated with abuse. Studies confirm that victims lose nearly 8 million days of paid work per year in the U.S.

Support for this project is provided through a Community Connections grant from HPF-Ohio, which is committed to helping all Ohioans, regardless of status, wealth or circumstances achieve their fullest heath potential.

Community Connections is a new initiative to prevent family violence by engaging the community.
