Grove City alumnus, student place at event

Teams headed by a Grove City College alumnus and a student were honored with second- and third-place finishes last month at Startup Weekend Pittsburgh at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater in Pittsburgh.

The entrepreneurial competition was presented by the Kauffman Foundation, the world’s largest foundation devoted to entrepreneurship.

Leading the second-place team was Joel T. Getty, 2000, who pitched GLDLX (Goldilocks), an app designed to determine if food on grocery store shelves meets a user’s dietary restrictions.

Third-place honors went to a team led by student Samantha Weber, Class of 2014. Weber pitched the Profile Passer, a geolocation-based platform that better connects prospective college athletes with recruiters by offering a way to easily send a recruiter a profile when both are attending the same tournament.

Fellow Grove City College alumnus Darrin Grove, 1991, served as a coach for the competition.

Startup Weekend is a global grass-roots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures.

In 2011, Startup Weekend featured more than 400 events in 100 countries around the world.

All Startup Weekend events welcome the public to pitch startup ideas and receive feedback.

Teams organically form around the most compelling ideas, as determined by popular vote.

Teams then work frantically for the next 54 hours on business model creation, coding, designing and market validation.

The weekend culminates with presentations by local entrepreneurial leaders, providing another opportunity for feedback.
