Students, parents and teachers came together to show off their school spirit during West Boulevard Elementary School’s annual tailgate party Sept. 28.

“I love it — it kicks off the school year and brings in a lot of school spirit. All the kids get to see each other and play with their friends. It’s great for students to see their parents and teachers working together. It teaches them how to be part of a community and it builds character. Students who see us doing this now will be doing this when they get older,” said event coordinator Melinda Snyder.

Music blared across the playground as children dressed in their best Boardman Spartans attire, ran, jumped and played games throughout the event. A host of activities kept participants entertained, including cornhole, a 50/50 raffle, face paintings and more. Parents had just as much fun as their children and were excited to mingle with teachers and staff.

“I like to see the community support here. I enjoy it, and I like to see my daughter, Isabella, have fun and I like meeting the other parents,” said Michelle Ianazone.

Principal Alphonse Cervello enjoyed the festivities and was excited to participate during the event as a parent with his family.

“This is a night I can be a PTA parent and I’m cooking hotdogs, too. I enjoy this event just as much as anyone else,” Cervello said.
