PSHS wind ensemble concert
The Poland Seminary High School wind ensemble will perform its first concert of the year on Sunday at 6 p.m. in the PSHS auditorium. Admission to the concert is free and it will feature music from Disney movies, Star Trek, Henry Mancini and more.
Before the concert, the Poland Band will host its annual Pasta Dinner in the PSHS cafeteria from noon to 6 p.m. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under (preschool and under are admitted free). Proceeds from the dinner will help defray the costs of the upcoming 2013 trip to Disney World where they will perform on New Year’s Eve. Trunk or Treat at local church
Heritage Presbyterian Church, located at 1951 Mathews Road in Poland, is having a free Trunk or Treat for all ages on Oct. 28 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the church parking lot. In the case of bad weather, the event will be held inside the Fellowship Hall. There will be treats, pumpkin decorating and other activities. Wear your best costume. Women’s Club fundraiser to be Tuesday
The Poland Women’s Club will host its annual fundraiser, an auction, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Holy Family Parish Center in Poland. The cost is $20 and includes appetizers, dessert, beverages and 20 raffle tickets. All proceeds will go to charities in the Mahoning Valley. Tickets will be available at the door.
Bonding with Babies and Books
For caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library every Wednesday in November at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s
The Poland library will host developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Thursday in November at 10:30 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Fun Time for 4s and 5s
The Poland library will host developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader on Nov. 1, 8, 15, and 29 at 1 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Elections 2012 at the Poland library
Children can vote for their favorite storybook character at the Poland library during regular hours now through Nov. 6. There will be three categories: toddler/preschool, grades K-2, and grades 3-6. There is a limit of one vote per library visit. Results will be posted Nov. 7 at the library.
Sky craft
Make art on a string to swing from the sky above the librarian’s desk at the Poland library during regular library hours throughout the month of November. This event is for school age children.
Lego my library
Kids, ages 6 and up, will meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on Nov. 27 from 6-7 p.m. Legos will be provided.

Bring your e-Reader to the Poland library on Nov. 5 or 26 from 6-7 p.m. and the librarians will show you how to download eBooks from the Library’s Digital Catalog on their website. There is limited availability so sign-up required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for Poland Library.

If you want to learn how you can check out and download audiobooks from the library’s digital catalog to your MP3 or WMA player, iPod, smart phone or other device, visit the Poland library on Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. until noon and the librarians will show you. Holiday closing
All public libraries in Mahoning County will be closed on Nov. 22 for Thanksgiving.
Sleepy-time fun
Put on your pajamas and go to the Poland library with the whole family for stories and fun on Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. This event will be a holiday program.
Trim a Tree for November
Decorate an ornament during regular library hours throughout November for the all-seasons tree in the Poland library. For children of all ages.
Friends of the Library meeting
Poland resident Dave Smith will present a program on some of Poland’s older homes at the Friend of the Poland Library meeting on Nov. 6 at 10 a.m.
Blood pressure screening
There will be a blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Poland library on Nov. 27 from 1-4 p.m.
Poland Relay for Life meeting set
The Poland Relay for Life is seeking teams for the next event. For information about the Poland Relay for Life and/or want to create your own team, people can attend the Nov. 15 meeting at the Memorial Baptist Church of Poland, 56 Water St, Poland at 6:30 p.m.
Halloween Carnival set for today
The Poland Junior Women’s Club’s annual Poland Halloween Carnival will be hosted at the McKinley Cafetorium at 1 p.m. today. The celebration is geared for children through the second grade, accompanied by an adult. Events will include games, treats and a costume parade. Boardman church hosts Trunk or Treat
Valley children can get a jump-start on Halloween by collecting all kinds of goodies during a free Trunk or Treat event at Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, today from 3 to 5 p.m.
The church is located on Route 224 across from the Giant Eagle Get-Go. The family-friendly event will feature candy, games and hayrides.
Church members, dressed in costumes, will decorate their cars and hand out candy to children. Those attending can also learn more about the church’s ministries, as well as its upcoming live nativity, Journey to Bethlehem, scheduled for Dec. 15 (1-4 p.m.).

Dairy Queen pumpkin hunt
There will be a free pumpkin hunt for children ages 2-9 today at the Dairy Queen location in Cornersburg, 3555 S. Meridian Road. There will be a costume contest and the option to decorate a pumpkin free with any Dairy Queen purchase.
Local church to host buffet
Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman, is planning its semi-annual International Buffet today. There will be seatings at 4 and 6 p.m. The cost will be $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 are admitted free. Tickets are available by calling the church office at 330-758-5745 or Delaine at 330-549-9116. Tickets must be purchased by Oct. 21. The dinner includes food and desserts from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Sweden. Proceeds will used for community outreach and the support of Bethel’s ministry.
Girl Scouts team up with Goodwill
Goodwill and the Girl Scouts are teaming up for the Good Turn Day donation drive on Nov. 3. Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries’ donation centers in Austintown, Boardman, Calcutta, Liberty, Salem and Warren will be participating in the event, along with Girl Scouts in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
Girl Scouts earn a patch by collecting re-saleable clothing and household items from friends, family and neighbors, and then donating these items to one of the participating donation centers on Good Turn Day. Girl Scouts are asked to donate three bags to earn their patch.
YMCA need vendors
The Davis Family YMCA is putting out a call for vendors for its annual Afternoon of the Arts today, from 12-4 p.m. The event will include a craft show, art exhibit, artists at work, kids’ crafts, live performances, music, poetry reading, and light refreshments. View historic wedding gowns
The Loghurst Farmhouse and Museum, located in Canfield on state Route 224, is hosting a Historic Wedding Gown Display starting today and continuing every Saturday and Sunday through Nov. 25 from 1-4 p.m. Wedding gowns from the Fowler family, local residents and Mahoning County Historical Society will be featured.
O’Charley donates 10 percent
Diners at O’Charley’s Restaurants can use a coupon printed from Meridian Community Care’s website to enable 10 percent of the check to go toward Meridian’s PANDA Leaders Club in local schools and prevention programs for kids in the community. The coupon must be used on Tuesdays from 4-9 p.m. at the Boardman or Niles O’Charley’s throughout October only. Both locations have extra coupons available upon request.

The grossest thing I ever read
Share your favorite loathsome literary moment from any book you’ve read by filling out our entry form at any library branch during regular hours or online at www.libraryvisit.org/teens. The Teen Advisory Board will select the grossest of the gross entries and the winners will receive autographed copies of ”The Monstrumologist” by Rick Yancey. For teens in grades 7-12.
Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest 2012
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who was lost to cancer. To honor Danielle, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the fourth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest. This year, to correspond with Teen Read week author Rick Yancey and his Monstrumologist series and in keeping with the 2012 Teen Read week theme of “It Came From the Library,” poems entered should have a horror-related theme: monsters, the supernatural, the gothic and so on. Entries may be submitted online at www.teenxtremeonline.org/submityourwork.cfm or on standard 8 Ω” x 11” paper (not to exceed two pages) to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type “Poem” and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed and be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.
Book discussion on leadership
There will be a book discussion on ”Charge,” facilitated by Greg Smith, at the Poland library at 8 a.m. every Tuesday in October. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
Local doctor offers free health lectures
Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room.
