‘Blitz for Barack’ features NFL greats

Former NFL greats Franco Harris and Jim Brown will sign autographs and take pictures at the United Steelworkers Local 1375 Hall, 684 North Park Ave., at noon Saturday at a rally for President Barack Obama. It is called the “Steelworkers and Steelers Steel Blitz for Barack.”

Parking lot closing near hike, bike trail BOARDMAN

The parking lot on the north end of the East Golf hike and bike trail, located at East Golf Drive and Shields Road, will be closed today for paving.

The lot will reopen Saturday. Those wishing to access the hike and bike trail are advised to use the overflow lot on West Golf Drive or the south parking lot off U.S. Route 224.

Six new citizens

Six people became U.S. citizens during a Thursday naturalization ceremony before Judge Mark Belinky of Mahoning County Probate Court. Their names, hometowns and countries of origin are: Diem Trang Thi Pham and Kellie Thanh Ngo, both Canfield, both Vietnam; Tahseen Mahmoud Assaf, Liberty, Palestine; Adam Joseph Chosen, Campbell, Greece; Qiao Lin, Austintown, People’s Republic of China; and Emanuela Dumitrascu, Youngstown, Romania.

YMCA celebrates 15 years of spinning

Youngstown

The YMCA of Youngstown celebrates 15 years of spinning at its Central location and kicks off its new spinning program at its Boardman branch Saturday.

The Dusk to Dawn Ride starts with a night spin from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Central Y, 17 N. Champion St.

The event continues Saturday with an outdoor road ride that will start at the Central Y, travel through Mill Creek Park, and end at the Davis Y, 45 McClurg Road, Boardman. An outdoor spin will follow at the Davis site from 10 a.m. to noon.

Activities will be provided for families and children during the outdoor spin until 12:30 p.m. Another event, Afternoon of the Arts, also begins at noon at the Boardman site, and will feature local artists, live music, dance performances, poetry readings, an artists-at-work space and a craft show.

Petuch to retire from recycling post

YOUNGSTOWN

Jim Petuch, director of the Mahoning County Recycling Division, better known as the Green Team, told commissioners Thursday he will retire at the end of this year after 30 years in litter control and recycling positions with Youngstown, Youngstown State University and the county.

Bridge gets a name

LOWELLVILLE

At the request of American Legion Post 247 in Lowellville, Mahoning County commissioners have named the previously unnamed bridge over the Mahoning River in that village the Lowellville Veterans Memorial Bridge.
