Men’s club to host dinner

The St. Joseph Men’s Club will host a roast beef dinner on Nov. 10 from 3-6 p.m. at the St. Joseph Social Hall, 4565 New Road, Austintown. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under and includes roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, beverage, and dessert.

Bonding with Babies and Books

For caregivers and their little ones aged 6 to 23 months, there will be 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library on Nov. 6, 13, and 27 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s

The Austintown library will host developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader on Nov. 7, 14, and 28 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun with Letters

The Austintown library will be hosting an hour of talking, singing, reading, writing and playing with letters for parents/caregivers and children ages 4-5 on Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. In addition to reading ABC books, children will play with tactile, magnetic and foam letters. They will also make letters with Play Dough, cookie cutters, stampers, and more. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The library’s got the beat

Find the rhythm and rhyme in story, song, and dance on Nov. 12. at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. Experiment with rhythm instruments and play games, including computer games, involving sound and dance. For children in grades K-6 and their caregivers. Younger children welcome and must be accompanied by an adult.

iPad play at library

Call 330-744-8636 and ask for a librarian at the location you would like to visit to schedule an appointment to play with an iPad on Nov. 3. They will ask for the subject area you would like to explore with your child and schedule you for a 20-minute session with the library’s iPad. Appointments are available from 9:30-11 a.m. Registration and adult ID (valid license, state ID or library card) is required. This event is for kids from age 4 to those in sixth grade. Child must be accompanied by an adult.

Gotta move storytime

The Austintown library will host a fun and interactive storytime for children who have trouble sitting still for long periods of time on Nov. 6, 13, and 27 at 11 a.m. They can dance and wiggle all that energy out with an active storytime for the young and restless. For ages 2-5. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Guess and go

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Austintown library during regular hours throughout November. The closest guess wins. This event is for children of all ages.

Kindle class is Nov. 17

Friends of the Library meeting

The Austintown Friends of the Library meeting will be on Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. and feature a program titled “Saluting the Military” where the Austintown Friends will salute those who serve our country in the armed services both present and past.

Howard B. Friend, Poland resident and educator in the Youngstown area, will present a vivid tale of World War II which he titled, “War Is the Rage of Hell.” He will focus on the Battle of the Bulge (December 1944-January 1945), one of the greatest battles in military history.

Serving as an infantry machine gunner in the 3rd Army under Gen. George Patton, Friend was seriously wounded. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for meritorious action against the enemy. Friend will tell about his battle experiences and lengthy recuperation from injuries.

Native American display open Nov. 8

The Austintown library will be hosting a Native American life display and presentation by the Pipe Family on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. This program is part of the Youngstown State University Diversity program series.

Library hosts PS2sday

Play video games in the meeting room of the Austintown library after school on Nov. 6 and 13 at 2:30 p.m. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Holiday closing for Thanksgiving

All public libraries in Mahoning County will be closed on Nov. 22 for Thanksgiving.

Disney fundraising party

Princesses and princes from preschool to grade three are invited to dress up as their favorite Disney princess or prince and join the fun at the Disney Prince and Princess Party at the Austintown library on Nov. 10 at 9 a.m. Refreshments will be served, compliments of the Friends of PLYMC.

Admission is $10 per child. Each child must be accompanied by an adult, but adult is admitted free. Admission includes a free voucher to the “Disney on Ice: Treasure Trove” presentation at the Covelli Centre. The first 100 reservations will be accepted. Additionally, the library is also sponsoring a contest to win tickets. Stop in a library near you to register to win a family four-pack of tickets to the show between Nov. 10-Dec. 1.

Dairy Queen pumpkin hunt

There will be a free pumpkin hunt for children ages 2-9 today at noon at the Dairy Queen location in Cornersburg, 3555 S. Meridian Road. There will be a costume contest and the option to decorate a pumpkin free with any Dairy Queen purchase.

Boardman church hosts Trunk or Treat

Valley children can get a jump-start on Halloween by collecting all kinds of goodies during a free Trunk or Treat event at Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, today from 3 to 5 p.m.

The church is located on Route 224 across from the Giant Eagle Get-Go. The family-friendly event will feature candy, games and hayrides.

Church members, dressed in costumes, will decorate their cars and hand out candy to children. Those attending can also learn more about the church’s ministries, as well as its upcoming live nativity, Journey to Bethlehem, scheduled for Dec. 15 (1-4 p.m.).

Mom and son event at Boardman Park

Boardman Park will be hosting its “Mom and Son Date Knight” on Nov. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lariccia Family Community Center. There will be food, dancing, crafts and posing for a professional photo as a keepsake. The boys (ages 3-8) are welcome to dress as their favorite hero or in nice dress attire. Tickets are on sale at the park office, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., cash or check only.

Church rummage sale to be today

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4470 Norquest Blvd., Austintown, will be hosting a rummage sale in the school cafeteria today from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Food and refreshments, provided by the Knights of Columbus, will be available for sale at the main entrance of the school.

AMS PTA annual craft show is Nov. 10

The Austintown Middle School PTA will host its 29th annual Craft Show on Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Vendor space is still available. Table rental is $40 per 8-foot table. Admission is free. There will be more than 200 crafters, food, a Chinese auction and more.

View historic wedding gowns

The Loghurst Farmhouse and Museum, located in Canfield on state Route 224, is hosting a Historic Wedding Gown Display starting today and continuing every Saturday and Sunday through Nov. 25 from 1-4 p.m. Wedding gowns from the Fowler family, local residents and Mahoning County Historical Society will be featured.

O’Charley donates 10 percent

Diners at O’Charley’s Restaurants can use a coupon printed from Meridian Community Care’s website to enable 10 percent of the check to go toward Meridian’s PANDA Leaders Club in local schools and prevention programs for kids in the community. The coupon must be used on Tuesdays from 4-9 p.m. at the Boardman or Niles O’Charley’s throughout October only. Both locations have extra coupons available upon request.

Girl Scouts team up with Goodwill

Goodwill and the Girl Scouts are teaming up for the Good Turn Day donation drive on Nov. 3. Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries’ donation centers in Austintown, Boardman, Calcutta, Liberty, Salem and Warren will be participating in the event, along with Girl Scouts in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Girl Scouts earn a patch by collecting re-saleable clothing and household items from friends, family and neighbors, and then donating these items to one of the participating donation centers on Good Turn Day. Girl Scouts are asked to donate three bags to earn their patch.

Local church to host buffet

Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman, is planning its semi-annual International Buffet today. There will be seatings at 4 and 6 p.m. The cost will be $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 are admitted free. Tickets are available by calling the church office at 330-758-5745 or Delaine at 330-549-9116. Tickets must be purchased by Oct. 21.

The dinner includes food and desserts from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Sweden. Proceeds will used for community outreach and the support of Bethel’s ministry.

YMCA need vendors

The Davis Family YMCA is putting out a call for vendors for its annual Afternoon of the Arts today, from 12-4 p.m. The event will include a craft show, art exhibit, artists at work, kids’ crafts, live performances, music, poetry reading, and light refreshments. Kids vote: Buckeye Children’s Book Award

Kids in grades K-5 can experience the voting process during regular library hours from today until Nov. 10. Cast your ballot for one of five nominated books and get a small prize. Grades K-2 and grades 3-5 have separate ballots. The Buckeye Children’s Book Award is an annual kids’ choice award, which began in 1981. The winners will be announced on Dec. 1 at www.bcbookaward.info/.

The grossest thing I ever read

Share your favorite loathsome literary moment from any book you’ve read by filling out our entry form at any library branch during regular hours or online at www.libraryvisit.org/teens. The Teen Advisory Board will select the grossest of the gross entries and the winners will receive autographed copies of ”The Monstrumologist” by Rick Yancey. For teens in grades 7-12.

Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest 2012

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who was lost to cancer. To honor Danielle, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahonin County is sponsoring the fourth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest. This year, to correspond with Teen Read week author Rick Yancey and his Monstrumologist series and in keeping with the 2012 Teen Read week theme of “It Came From the Library”, poems entered should have a horror-related theme: monsters, the supernatural, the gothic and so on. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.teenxtremeonline.org/submityourwork.cfm or on standard 8 Ω” x 11” paper (not to exceed two pages) to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, please select the writing type “Poem” and be sure to include your phone number. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Monster hunt for teens

To be a good monster hunter, you first have to know where to find them. Make the teen area of the Austintown library safe for humans by finding the hidden monsters all through the month of October during regular hours and you could win. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures for healthy living. The program will be hosted in St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room.
