YSU soccer team falls to Detroit

The Youngstown State women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Detroit on Wednesday. The Penguins fall to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in the Horizon League while the Titans improve to 9-6-1 overall and 5-2 in the league.

After a scoreless first half, Detroit’s Kaitlin Quarrell took the ball the length of the field and scored at the 46:54 mark to put the Titans up 1-0.

Heather Brown added a goal at the 60:31 mark to give the Titans of 2-0 lead.

YSU goalkeepers made five saves and faced 12 shots.

The Penguins were outshot, 12-5. The Penguins close out the regular season by hosting Wright State on Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.

18-bout card set in Hubbard

HUBBARD

An 18-bout amateur card featuring up-and-coming boxers from the area’s top gyms will be presented by Slugfest Boxing on Saturday at St. Patrick Church Gymnasium.

The “Fall Brawl” event will showcase boxers from the Tri-County area and Western Pennsylvania with the main event featuring Matt “Irish” Conway of Pittsburgh taking on Thomas “Hit Man” Matice from Cleveland in a 138-pound battle.

Tickets cost $15 for general admission and $10 for children younger than 10. VIP tables (10 seats, $200) are available.

The show begins at 7 p.m. with the doors opening at 6 p.m.

Cavs extend Scott’s contract

CLEVELAND

Just days before starting his third season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, coach Byron Scott was given a fourth.

A person familiar with Cleveland’s decision said Wednesday night that the Cavs have exercised the option on Scott’s contract for the 2013-14 season.

The team picked up the option less than a week before Scott opens his third year with the club, said the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the Cavs’ policy is to not make player or staff contracts public

The 51-year-old Scott is 40-108 in his two seasons with Cleveland. However, the team has been impressed with the way he has developed its young roster, which includes point guard Kyrie Irving, the NBA’s reigning rookie of the year, and second-year forward Tristan Thompson.

NCAA president defends sanctions

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.

NCAA president Mark Emmert says the sanctions levied on Penn State for the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal dealt with the behavior of university leaders and whether or not the school handled the allegations appropriately.

Emmert told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday in Chicago that the “fact that there was criminal activity is not the NCAA’s issue.”

The landmark penalties handed down by the NCAA in July included a four-year bowl ban and strict scholarship cuts.

A former assistant football coach, Sandusky was sentenced this month to at least 30 years in prison after being convicted on dozens of criminal counts. Authorities said allegations occurred on and off school property.

The NCAA had said before the sanctions it would look into institutional control at Penn State.

Sporting KC advances

KANSAS CITY, Kan.

C.J. Sapong scored the go-ahead goal off an assist from Kei Kamara, and Sporting Kansas City beat the Philadelphia Union 2-1 on Wednesday night to win its second straight Eastern Conference regular-season title.

Antoine Hoppenot scored an equalizer early in the second half for the Union (10-17-6), but Sapong answered when Kamara found him open on the wing in the 82nd minute. Sapong’s shot past Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath found the back of the net for his ninth goal of the year.
