Ex-Pittsburgh Steeler charged with assault

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Former Pittsburgh Steelers center Chukky Okobi is due in court for a preliminary hearing on assault charges stemming from an incident in August.

Details of the alleged assault were not immediately available today.

Okobi was not arrested but instead charged by summons with five counts of simple assault, a misdemeanor.

Okobi told reporters Wednesday night he was not aware of the charges. The Associated Press could not immediately reach Okobi today for further comment, and court records don’t list an attorney for him.

The 33-year-old Okobi was a member of the Steelers team that won Super Bowl XL. He spent seven seasons in the NFL, six of them with Pittsburgh.
