DaBoondox will again Bridge the Gap

Bridge the Gap, the signature show for Valley hip-hop duo DaBoondox, will return this weekend after a one-year absence.

DaBoondox — Troy Napier and Jeff Killin — started the annual event six years ago as a way to get music fans to sample something new. The lineup always runs the gamut from hip-hop to rock and beyond.

This year, Bridge the Gap will be at Sammy’s Great American Bar, New Road at Raccoon Road, Austintown, at 9 p.m. Saturday. The lineup includes Super Cheef, N.E.I., Reznik, Danny Hedrix, Trevor Q, Kraze, and in the headliner spot, DaBoondox. Tickets are $3 in advance from any band member and $6 at the door.

DaBoondox will give the show a Halloween flair, including costume contests with prizes.

Last year, the show was slated for the club in the Metroplex Hotel in Liberty. It had to be canceled when the bar closed. The duo settled on Sammy’s this year because of its ample size and large stage.

Despite the fact that Napier moved to Columbus in July, DaBoondox is still pressing forward with its next album. Napier has been driving back to Youngstown on weekends to record.

Killin — who has been DJing at Bill’s Place in Austintown — said the next release, “UnorthoDOX,” will have 13 songs. He called it their best album yet.

“We really got creative with this one,” he said.

It’s due for release early next year.

Film examines economy of post-industrial cities

“After the Factory,” a documentary about the post- industrial economy in two cities that know it best — Detroit and Lodz, Poland — will be screened at 8 tonight at The Lemon Grove Cafe, 110 W. Federal St., downtown.

Basement Club reunites to perform ‘Spinal Tap’

The Basement Club will rise again this Halloween weekend to perform the “Spinal Tap” album Friday at Cedars Lounge.

The Basement Club is an ad-hoc band of local rock all-stars who assemble one night a year to perform a classic album in its entirety at the downtown rock ’n’ roll bar. Last year, it did Beck’s “Odelay.”

Though the concept stays the same, the band lineup changes every year. This time it consists of Winfield Dray (Album), Sean Tress (Pictora), Nick Rossi (The Kellys), Bob Young (Gossip Culture, Signature Event), Jon Dean (Asleep) and Dave Knowlden (Realtime Digimob).

The show starts at 11 p.m.

Opera Western Reserve completes ‘Barber’ casting

Opera Western Reserve has completed casting for its Nov. 30 production of “The Barber of Seville” at Stambaugh Auditorium.

Supporting Lawrence Brownlee, the international opera star and Youngstown native, in the role of Count Almaviva will be coloratura soprano Randa Rouweyha as Rosina. Rouweyha, also a Youngstown native, lives in Washington, D.C., and has sung with the Washington National Opera. Like Brownlee, this will be her hometown debut.

Also cast are Brian Keith Johnson, Jason Budd, Timothy J. Bruno, Diana Farrell, Robert Pierce and Tom O’Donnell.
