Youngstown State University’s College of Fine & Performing Arts is implementing a program aimed at high school juniors and seniors interested in the creative or communication arts.

The Creative Start program lets students work directly with college faculty, technology and resources. The program is slated to begin spring semester 2013.

Participants will explore career options at an earlier stage, giving college-bound students a head start.

Students will attend specific sessions several times during the semester after the regular school day for intense experiential instruction using the same technology, equipment and resources provided to YSU students.

Students must complete an application and have a minimum 3.0 grade point average to be considered.

“As a Career Tech teacher at TCTC, I have witnessed that students need to have hands on experience to truly learn about the electronic media field,” said Kris Doran, interactive multimedia instructor at TCTC. “The Creative Start program is a great opportunity for students to get started with that experience right away.”

The Telecommunication Studies program will explore television production, audio and video editing, on-air talent, sports, news or any area in the electronic media.

Those interested in the Theater and Dance track will discover the many faces of human nature by means of creative re-enactments drawn from heightened moments in life. Students will learn about acting, dance, directing and designing (costuming, lighting, sound and stage design) and gain experience in the practical crafts involved in bringing the results of those explorations to the public stage.

Creative Start, a proprietary program within the College of Fine & Performing Arts, will offer students a strong extended experience and let them feel as if they are part of the college.

“With Creative Start, we will partner with schools to craft an individualized mentoring experience for those interested in our programs,” said Bryan W. DePoy, dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts.”

There is no fee to apply; however, once accepted, there is a $25 materials fee. Students interested in learning about the program should contact Justin Edwards at jjedwards@ysu.edu or 330-941-1397.
