2 Ohio nurses get probation in malnutrition death

CINCINNATI (AP) — Two Ohio nurses have been sentenced to probation in the malnutrition death of a 14-year-old girl who had cerebral palsy and weighed 28 pounds when she died.

Mary Kilby of Miamisburg and Kathryn Williams of Englewood were sentenced in a Dayton courtroom today and will have to surrender their nursing licenses.

The two women had pleaded no contest to failing to provide for a functionally impaired child and had faced up to a year-and-a-half in prison.

Authorities say that Kilby and Williams were supposed to be conducting inspections and health assessments of 14-year-old Makayla Norman.

Authorities say there were numerous signs of neglect when Makayla died March 1, 2011.

The girl’s mother had been sentenced to nine years in prison for her death.
