The League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown will host several speakers for the event “What Does School Choice Cost Community Taxpayers?” at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Austintown Middle School Cafeteria, 800 S. Raccoon Road.

Speakers include Bill Phillis, of Coalition for Equity and Adequacy of School Funding, and Steve Dyer of Education Fellow Innovation Ohio, and treasurers from Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Poland and South Range.

Fall fest planned

Pleasant Valley Evangelical Church sponsors a free community Fall Park Fest from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Wick-Saranac Park, Wick and Saranac avenues in Youngstown.

There will be free food, music, balloons, inflatables, face painting, pumpkin decorating, prize giveaways, games and candy.

Composting workshop

Slippery Rock, Pa.

The Macoskey Center and Slippery Rock in Bloom hosts a workshop on composting and rainwater harvesting from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Christine McHenry-Glenn will explain how to create a balanced and odor-free compost pile, how to assemble build-it-yourself compost bins and how to use compost effectively.

Mike Arblaster will instruct attendees on rainwater barrels and how they can provide potable drinking water.

The event will take place at the McCoskey Center, 247 Harmony Road. The workshop is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Registrations can be made by calling the center at 724-738-4050 or emailing macoskey.center@sru.edu. The Macoskey Center is housed within the college of health, environment, and science and Slippery Rock University.
