Several downtown streets will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday for the 2012 Peace Race. The streets include Commerce Street between Walnut Street and Belmont Avenue, Champion Street between Commerce and Front streets, Belmont Avenue between Commerce and Martin Luthern King Blvd., Front Street from Martin Luther King Blvd. to Champion Street, Vindicator Square between Commerce and West Front streets, and Federal Street between Wick and Fifth avenues.

Reviving your plants

Canfield

Two Ohio horticulturists will discuss plant diagnostics at the Ohio State University Extension, 490 S. Broad St., from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday .

Participants will learn basics of Integrated Pest Management to help control diseases and disorders on plants. The instructors will review the basics of environmental controls to prevent diseases from gaining ground in the garden.

Gardeners and horticultural enthusiasts should bring an entirely alive part of a plant and a part that has been affected by the disease or disorder. Hands-on diagnostics will be conducted on samples.

Woman indicted

Youngstown

A 44-year-old Poland Township woman, accused of felonious assault and failure to stop after an accident, was indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury. Patricia Goodin of Shawbutte Road in Poland was initially charged in August by Poland Township police after ramming her car twice into another vehicle that contained her ex-husband, Darren Goodin, who is a township road department employee, and another woman.

The incident occurred as Darren Goodin pulled up to a stop sign on Shawbutte at U.S. Route 224, according to police.

A police report said that Patricia Goodin, who was traveling toward them on Route 224, turned onto Shawbutte, hit Darren Goodin’s car, then backed up and hit his car a second time before fleeing to her home. No serious injuries were reported. The couple filed for divorce last year, according to court records.

Drug sweep in Salem

SALEM

A surprise search by drug-sniffing dogs yielded a clean sweep at Salem Senior and Junior High School on Thursday morning, with the exception of a small amount of marijuana found in a student’s vehicle.

“We didn’t find anything in the school,” Salem patrolman Brad Davis said.

He referred to the marijuana found in the vehicle in the parking lot as shake, the loose leaves left over sometimes. No charges were filed, but he talked to the student about drug use. The student’s parents also were notified.

War veterans to meet

Austintown

The Korean War Veterans Association, Mahoning Valley Chapter 137, meets at 7 p.m. Monday at Legion Post 301, 3652 Oakwood Ave. Medals of peace will be distributed at the meeting.
