Boardman marching band plans concert, ‘Cupcake Wars’

The Boardman Spartan Marching Band will be in concert at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Boardman High School Gymnasium.

This annual event is a retrospective of the 2012 marching season.

The band will be seated and playing all the music from the field shows while the Spartan Sweethearts, Silks, Twirlers and Drum Major perform their visual routines on the gym floor.

Immediately after the concert, audience members will be invited across the hall for a reception where they will be able to sample cupcakes baked, decorated and displayed by more than 20 teams of band students.

“Cupcake Wars BSMB-Style” will be based on the hit Food Network reality show “Cupcake Wars.”

Participating students have to create, decorate and present cupcakes that best capture the spirit of this year’s Spartan Marching Band opening and/or closing routines, The Olympics and Superheroes.

A panel of judges will evaluate the entries on taste while all concertgoers will be able to cast their vote on best presentation. Winners will be announced at the concert and everyone will be invited to go into the cafeteria and eat the cupcakes.

Musical selections for the concert will include “She Bangs,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Fifties Medley,” “U2 Medley,” “Mr. Pinstripe Suit,” and much more including the Olympics Opener and Superheroes Closer.

Director of Bands Thomas M. Ruggieri and his staff are confident that audiences will be treated to one of the best marching band concerts they have ever seen.

Admission to the concert is $3 for adults and $2 for students. Senior citizens are admitted free to all Boardman Band events.

The 204-member Spartan Marching Band, also directed by Timothy Tuite, Steven Chambers and Michael Shevock is the largest marching band in the area and the largest organization in all of the Boardman Schools.

It performs in many community events in addition to all Boardman Spartan Varsity football games.

The band started its performance season in August by performing at a Cleveland Indians baseball game, three local band nights and the Boardman Rotary Oktoberfestival.

In November, the band will be traveling to Chicago to perform live for more than 300,000 people watching the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade and millions more watching on television. More information can be found on the Web at www.boardmanband.org.
