Gimme a break: Senior running back Jamaine Cook rushed for a season-high 177 yards and three TDs in last week’s loss to Illinois State. Problem was, he carried 30 times, with YSU’s other running backs combining for two carries. “We probably need to get him out of the game a little more,” said YSU coach Eric Wolford. “We hang our hat on him a little too much. We have plenty of backs that are capable of stepping in and executing.” For the season, the Penguins have rushed 262 times and Cook has 133 of those. (Backup Torrian Pace is second with 38 carries.) Cook wore down at the end of last season and, before the season, the coaches vowed to cut back on his playing time. Last season, he had 145 carries after six games. “We got to get those other guys in there and we’re going to make a conscious effort to do that early in the game so Cook can be fresh late in the game,” Wolford said.
Early recruit: South Fort Myers (Fla.) cornerback Kenny Bishop verbally committed to the Penguins on Thursday, according to Florida reporter David Dorsey’s Twitter account. Bishop (6-0, 185), who had six interceptions as a junior, broke his right foot early in the season. Bishop also had an offer from Middle Tennessee State, according to the Naples News. He is YSU’s first known recruit from the 2013 class. The Penguins do not typically pick up most of their recruits until closer to signing day, which is in February.
