Southern Park Mall and Hometown Pharmacy are sponsoring a Health, Wellness and Fitness Showcase from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The two-day showcase will feature the latest in weight management, physical fitness, healthy living and more. Participants will have the opportunity to receive flu shots, chair massages and free blood pressure screenings throughout event. Local vendors will be provide demonstrations. ’88 assault victim dies

Katherine Melnick, who was brutally beaten and blinded in 1988 at her Wick Street Southeast home in an attack that also killed her husband, George Melnick, has died.

Katherine Melnick, 88, died Tuesday in an area nursing home.

One of the two men who attacked the Melnicks, Christopher W. Daniel, 42, was denied parole in September 2011 after serving 22 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery.

He will be eligible for possible parole again in 2015.

Authorities said Daniel attacked Katherine Melnick with a brick, while Daniel’s co-defendant, Andre Williams, attacked George Melnick, then 65, also with a brick. Williams, 45, is on death row.

Indictment in sex case

YOUNGSTOWN

A 41-year-old North Jackson man has been indicted on 46 counts of pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor and illegal use of a minor in nudity oriented material or performance. A Mahoning County grand jury Thursday handed up the indictments against Milbur Stout, formerly of Mahoning Avenue.

Jackson Township police arrested Stout after an investigation uncovered sexually explicit photos of a minor at his residence in May. Stout posted a $4,000 bond and was released from jail pending further investigation and proceedings in the case against him.

Free Halloween party

Parto’s Golf Center and Pumpkin Patch has its annual free Halloween party for children of all ages from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday.
