Fitch High School students in Steve Ward’s Life and Literature class decided to take a stand against violence as they marched in solidarity alongside hundreds of people in the cold, dreary weather during the second Sojourn to the Past nonviolence rally Oct. 7.

The rally, which began at Youngstown State University’s Williamson College of Business Administration and ended in downtown Youngstown, remembered victims while teaching participants action plans to practice and spread nonviolence throughout their communities.

Students participated in the walk for a variety of reasons. Some wanted to shed light on the positivity in their community, while others felt their participation was nothing out of the ordinary.

“I really don’t think that we did something that we should feel proud of. We are meeting the basic standards of being a descent human being. You should promote nonviolence already, so I don’t think that I did anything extraordinary,” said Rachel Jones.

Ward was proud to see his students want to take such a stand and promote positivity.

“As a teacher, it makes me feel good that kids care enough. They know that one person can make a difference,” Ward said.
