Dobbins Elementary School students in Karen DiVito and Stephanie Mateja’s classes took a crash course in the importance of fire prevention and safety during a visit from the Western Reserve Fire Station Oct. 10.

“It’s important for them to learn the concepts of safety in any situation. I think the program was awesome. It was hands-on and entertaining. They love climbing through the smoke and looking at the fire truck,” said Stephanie Mateja.

There were few dull moments as students learned how to change a smoke detector, crawl underneath smoke and several other safety techniques. Students laughed as several of their classmates dressed as a firemen and even a smoke detector.

Fire Educator Bill O’Hara and several firemen used humorous antics and props to entertain students while teaching them the importance of being safe as they encouraged students to trust their local firemen practice fire prevention.

“Firefighters are your friends. They are there to help you, so never be afraid or hide from a firefighter. You don’t go lighting anything. Anything that needs to be lit is for your adults like your teachers or your parents,” O’Hara said.
