Dobbins Elementary School first-graders became florists for a day by planting flowers in front of the school’s lawn Oct. 11. Students planted mums donated by Riverside Garden as part of their unit on living and nonliving things.

“We do a unit on living and nonliving things. We plant them now so that in the spring, we can come out and see them when they have grown. They absolutely love looking at the flowers in the springtime when they have fully bloomed. I think it helps children better grasp the concept more with hands-on activities as compared to just reading it in books,” said first-grade teacher Kim Aikens.

Some parents weren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty to help students plant flowers. Sevasti Corfias was pleased that her son, Michael, and his classmates got a hands-on learning experience.

“I think that it’s good that the students are learning in different ways. I’m also happy that I could be here with my son. It’s special to be with your child and help out. I always try to be involved when I can and he’s excited to see me here, too,” Corfias said.
