Poland Shepherd of the Valley residents and their friends and families were all about fun and games during the facility’s monthly card game and luncheon Aug. 29.

“It’s a way for them to socialize, communicate and network. A lot of these people have been coming here since we started it. It’s something that they really enjoy. There’s a stigma about assisted living and we’re opening our doors and letting them know it’s a very comfortable and care-free environment for our independent residents,” said Admissions and Marketing Director Elida Cowles.

The event, which began as a small group of 15 card players, has now blossomed to more than 75 players from all over the Mahoning Valley, according to Cowles.

Sounds of shuffling cards and laughter filled the meeting room as die-hard card players showed off their best skills. The event was particularly special for 93-year-old independent resident Susan Utaking, who hadn’t been able to partake in her favorite pasttime due to medical illness.

“It’s like being in heaven again. I love playing cards. I’ve been coming here for a long time,” Utaking said.
