Breast-cancer fundraiser tonight features bars & bras

The Youngstown Firefighters Union Local 312 is looking to donate a good chunk of money to breast cancer awareness with brassieres full of donated cash.
The union hosts a “Stuff the Bra Bar Crawl” from 6 p.m. today to 1 a.m. Saturday at eight downtown bars.
At the event, firefighters will wear brassieres over their regular clothes into which participants and others can stuff donations for breast-cancer awareness.
Courtney Kelly, event organizer, came up with the idea for the bar crawl.
“I was trying to come up with a fundraiser for breast-cancer awareness and thought this idea for a bar crawl would be a good way to bring business to the downtown area and raise money at the same time,” she said. “One hundred percent of our proceeds goes toward breast-cancer awareness. This is not about making profit. We will make no money on this.”
Eight bars participating in the event are O’Donald’s Irish Pub, Dooney’s Downtown Bar & Grill, Imbibe Martini Bar, 9ine Lounge & Nightclub, Draught House, V2, End of the Tunnel Bar and The Lemon Grove. Several of the bars will have entertainment, and each establishment will make a donation from its proceeds to breast-cancer awareness.
Those participating in the event will purchase a $10 ticket with the list of all eight downtown bars. Participants will go to each bar on the list and purchase at least one alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage, then have their tickets stamped.
Once the ticket has all eight stamps, it is turned in for a chance to win a 50-inch plasma flat-screen TV donated by the Youngstown Police Association.
“I just want everyone to come out and have fun. We all have this common goal to raise money for breast cancer awareness,” Kelly said. “So many people have been affected by this, young women, old women, men, everyone knows someone who has been affected. The whole idea is to educate people and let people know there is support out there. This is very heartfelt for me.”
Kelly said she hopes to raise at least several thousand dollars in ticket sales and donations.
“I am extremely optimistic. We have purchased 500 tickets for the event and I would be very happy to get through those 500 tickets. Plus, there are the donations from the bras where people will be able to make donations,” she said.
