Boardman soccer loses to Massillon Jackson

On Oct. 9, the team hosted Massillon Jackson in the final Federal League match of the year. Jackson, the dominant program in the Federal League over the past two decades, came away with a 2-1 win against the Boardman boys soccer team. Nico DiIanni registered the lone Spartans goal off an assist from Pete Ryan. Anthony Calautti had 10 saves in goal for Boardman. In the junior varsity game, BHS defeated Jackson 2-1 with unassisted goals from Zach Smotzer and Andrew Gable. Brian Fryda had four saves for the Spartans.

Boardman boys soccer falls

On Oct. 11, Boardman fell to the undefeated Austintown Fitch team 4-1. Mark D’Eramo logged the only Spartans goal, while Calautti again had 10 saves for BHS. In the junior varsity match at Austintown, Cameron Missos gave the Spartans an early lead. Boardman held the advantage most of the game before giving up a penalty kick that ended the contest in a 1-1 tie. Fryda had five saves as goalkeeper.

Boys soccer loses to Lakeview

On Oct. 13, the varsity team concluded the suspended match against Lakeview from September. Trailing 2-0 at the time the game was resumed, the Spartans gave up another goal to finish the regular season with a 3-0 loss. The junior varsity match was completed as scheduled in September, resulting in a 2-0 BHS win.

Boardman boys soccer awarded

Players from the Boardman High School boys soccer team will attend the Youngstown District Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Awards Banquet at Mount Carmel in Youngstown on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. Players to be recognized are the D-I All-District First team of senior Nico DiIanni, junior Luke Marsco, senior Mark D’Eramo, and senior Anthony Calautti, the All-County (Mahoning) First Team of senior Nico DiIanni and junior Luke Marsco, the All-County (Mahoning) Honorable Mention to junior Alex Thomas, the Individual Senior Academic Award to senior Anthony Calautti, and the Team Academic Award will be presented to Boardman High School. Nico DiIanni, Mark D’Eramo and Anthony Calautti were also nominated to play in the Senior All-Star Game.

BGMS falls to Canfield

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade volleyball team lost to Canfield 25-16, 19-25, and 25-23 to make them 7-8 on the year. Briawna Santiago led with eight aces followed by Zoe Sims with three aces and three blocks. The eighth grade team was defeated by Canfield 25-5 and 25-8 to make their season record 4-11. Team leaders were Lexi Stutz and Brittany Mathews.

BGMS cross country season ends

The Boardman Glenwood cross country team finished its season at the Middle School Championships. Nathaniel Ams finished 11th overall in a field of 114 boys. Matt Maroni, Mark Moradian, Chris Petrus and Mathew Moradian also scored for the boys.

In the girls’ race, Cassie Stitt, Casey Zaitzew, Logan Mitchell and Savannah Beule finished in the top 45 with Lauren Pavlansky and Allison Janak scoring for the team as well.

BGMS stops Youngstown Christian

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade volleyball team defeated Youngstown Christian 27-29, 25-13, 25-18 to improve its season record to 7-7. Briawna Santiago led with eight aces, followed by Riley Zawrotuk with three aces and Marissa Sudac with two aces. The eighth-grade team beat Youngstown Christian 25-14, 25-16 to improve to 4-10. Leading the team in kills was Emily Hurl and leading with sets was Alaina Hufnagel.

Youngstown Orthopaedic Saturday sports clinic

Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates’ Saturday sports clinics, geared specifically to fall sports student-athletes in need of immediate attention to sports injuries, is running. The clinics run from 9-11 a.m. every Saturday throughout the high school sports season.

These clinics are open to players involved in football, volleyball, soccer, golf and other high school and college sports. They are held at the practice’s Building A at the northwest corner of Tippecanoe Road and Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. More information is available at www.youngstownortho.com.
