Pumpkin Paloosa at Boardman Evangel

Evangel Church in Boardman will host the first Pumpkin Paloosa on Halloween night (Oct. 31) from 5-7 p.m. in the parking lot of the church on Southern Boulevard. Pumpkin Paloosa is open to everyone, either as an alternative to trick-or-treating or as a chance for families to take a break from walking the neighborhoods surrounding the church. The event will feature carnival games with prizes, spin art, face painting, an inflatable slide, hot chocolate, coffee and doughnuts.

Evangel Baptist Church is located on Southern Boulevard between Melrose and Stanton Avenues, just south of Indianola in Boardman.

Dairy Queen pumpkin hunt

There will be a free pumpkin hunt for children ages 2-9 at the Dairy Queen in Austintown, 146 N. Canfield Niles Road, today at noon and on Oct. 27 at the Dairy Queen location in Cornersburg, 3555 S. Meridian Road. There will be a costume contest and the option to decorate a pumpkin free with any Dairy Queen purchase.

Kevin Juillerat family fundraiser

There will be a fundraiser for the family of Kevin Juillerat, who suffered a major stroke at the end of August that left him with left side paralysis, on Oct. 21 at Don Victor’s Restaurant. It is located on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown from noon until 5 p.m.

Juillerat lives in Austintown and has been Parts Manager at Greenwood Chevrolet for four of the 20 years he has been employed there.

Dinner tickets cost $25 per person (available at the cashier window or see Teri Simon) and include a choice of meal (Mexican or American), and the chance to win one of four grand prizes, in addition to a number of items at the Chinese auction. Tickets come with 26 Chinese auction tickets. Grand prizes include gift cards to the Seneca Alleghany Casino and Hotel, a 32-inch flat-screen television and more.

Election day bake sale

The Mickey Schuster Scholarship Committee of Bethel Lutheran Church at 425 Crestview Dr., Boardman, will hold an Election Day bake sale on Nov. 6. A variety of baked goods and coffee will be sold, starting at 6:30 a.m. All proceeds go to the Mickey Schuster Scholarship Fund and are distributed each year to the college students at Bethel.

Mom and son event at Boardman Park

Boardman Park will be hosting its “Mom and Son Date Knight” on Nov. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lariccia Family Community Center. There will be food, dancing, crafts and posing for a professional photo as a keepsake. The boys (ages 3-8) are welcome to dress as their favorite hero or in nice dress attire. Tickets are on sale at the park office, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., cash or check only.

Pork-kraut dinner is Sunday

The Youngstown Saxon Club will be hosting its next pork-kraut dinner on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The cost is $8.75 for adults and $5 for children. The price includes dessert and beverage as well as the meal. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

Roast beef dinner is tomorrow

The Kids Grieve Too organization at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner or Wick Avenue and Wood Street is hosting its 15th annual Roast Beef Dinner and Dessert tomorrow from 12-4 p.m.

Kids Grieve Too is offered for children experiencing the loss of a significant other in their lives and is headed by Elaine Curran, a licensed Independent Social Worker.

Archery Friends and Family Day is today

Today, there will be a Friends and Family Day supporting On Target Outfitters from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 8281 Leffingwell Road, Canfield.

The cost to participate is $10 per family and there will be 3-D archery, air rifle shooting, trap shooting, fishing (bring your own pole), tomahawk shooting and more. Food will be available to purchase.

Girl Scouts team up with Goodwill

Goodwill and the Girl Scouts are teaming up for the Good Turn Day donation drive on Nov. 3. Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries’ donation centers in Austintown, Boardman, Calcutta, Liberty, Salem and Warren will be participating in the event, along with Girl Scouts in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Girl Scouts earn a patch by collecting re-saleable clothing and household items from friends, family and neighbors, and then donating these items to one of the participating donation centers on Good Turn Day. Girl Scouts are asked to donate three bags to earn their patch.

O’Charley donates 10 percent

Diners at O’Charley’s Restaurants can use a coupon printed from Meridian Community Care’s website to enable 10 percent of the check to go toward Meridian’s PANDA Leaders Club in local schools and prevention programs for kids in the community. The coupon must be used on Tuesdays from 4-9 p.m. at the Boardman or Niles O’Charley’s throughout October only. Both locations have extra coupons available upon request.

Meet Greg Miller at the farm

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “The Big Year” on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Greg Miller, movie consultant for the film “The Big Year,” will entertain the audience with stories from the year he traveled 130,000 miles and saw more than 700 bird species. This event will be hosted at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on Route 46 in Canfield. All are welcome. For more information, call 888-846-8851.

YMCA need vendors

The Davis Family YMCA is putting out a call for vendors for its annual Afternoon of the Arts on Oct. 27, from 12-4 p.m. The event will include a craft show, art exhibit, artists at work, kids’ crafts, live performances, music, poetry reading, and light refreshments. Local church to host buffet

Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman, is planning its semi-annual International Buffet Oct. 27. There will be seatings at 4 and 6 p.m. The cost will be $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 are admitted free. Tickets are available by calling the church office at 330-758-5745 or Delaine at 330-549-9116. Tickets must be purchased by Oct. 21.

The dinner includes food and desserts from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Sweden. Proceeds will used for community outreach and the support of Bethel’s ministry.

Public labyrinth walk is Oct. 21

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will offer the final guided walk of the season tomorrow from 2-3 p.m. and celebrate the Journey of Autumn and marking the Feast of St. Ursula, for whom the Ursuline Sisters are named. Anyone wishing to walk the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the official walks can come anytime at their own convenience.

There are guides provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need. The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the Labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking.

Join the library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader on Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. Costumes may be worn to the event.

Find the missing pumpkin at the Boardman library during regular hours Oct. 21-31 and send Peter home. Whisper the pumpkin’s location to the librarian and you may choose a prize. This event is for children of all ages.

Yoga for the family

Yoga stories and and activities for you and your child will be available at the Boardman library from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday. Wear comfy clothes and bring a yoga mat or a towel.

Yoga for 2’s and 3’s

Bend, stretch and reach for the stars on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Children ages 2-3 will crawl through the tunnel and try some yoga moves. Children must be accompanied by an adult and the program will last 30 minutes. Wear comfy clothes and bring a yoga mat or a towel.

The grossest thing I ever read

Share your favorite loathsome literary moment from any book you’ve read by filling out our entry form at any library branch during regular hours or online at www.libraryvisit.org/teens. The Teen Advisory Board will select the grossest of the gross entries and the winners will receive autographed copies of ”The Monstrumologist” by Rick Yancey. For teens in grades 7-12.

Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest 2012

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who was lost to cancer. To honor Danielle, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the fourth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest. This year, to correspond with Teen Read week author Rick Yancey and his Monstrumologist series and in keeping with the 2012 Teen Read week theme of “It Came From the Library,” poems entered should have a horror-related theme: monsters, the supernatural, the gothic and so on. Entries may be submitted online at www.teenxtremeonline.org/submityourwork.cfm or on standard 8 Ω” x 11” paper (not to exceed two pages) to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type “Poem” and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed and be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Blood drive at the library

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross, serving the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital, at the Boardman library on Oct. 29 from 1:30-6:30 p.m.

Rivers Casino bus trip

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh on Friday. All seats are non-refundable and all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society Boardman Relay for Life on behalf of Team Schein.

The group will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location at approximately 12:30 a.m. The cost is $30 per person and this includes $20 in free coin play.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. Parents are encouraged to join their children for parachute stories and games for the 30-minute storytime at the Boardman library on Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. This event is for the whole family.

I am thankful for...

Show and tell the Boardman library what you are thankful for by drawing a picture and writing a sentence or two during library hours Nov. 12-23. All entries will be displayed in the library. All who enter will get a bookmark and a sticker. For children of all ages.

Scrabble for Tweens

Play Scrabble at the Boardman library on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. and share what you are reading. The one hour program is open to students in grades 4-6 and they will crown a champion.

TAB Meeting

Check out at the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting on Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman Library. Newcomers are welcome. For teens in grades 7-12.

There will be a Boardman Friends of the Library meeting on Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. The presentation this meeting will be “New Immigration in America and the Mahoning Valley” with Dr. Rosemary D’Apolito, Department of Sociology and Anthropology at YSU.

If you are done with your jigsaw puzzle and want to try another, join other jigsaw enthusiasts and swap puzzles at the Boardman library on Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC.

Learn how to crochet at the Boardman library on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. Sign up now by calling 330-744-8636 and ask for the Boardman Library to register for the one hour crochet lesson. Bring a size G crochet hook with you, yarn will be provided. Program is open to all interested adults and teens.
