Dairy Queen pumpkin hunt

There will be a free pumpkin hunt for children ages 2-9 at the Dairy Queen in Austintown, 146 N. Canfield Niles Road, today at noon and on Oct. 27 at the Dairy Queen location in Cornersburg, 3555 S. Meridian Road. There will be a costume contest and the option to decorate a pumpkin free with any Dairy Queen purchase.

Kevin Juillerat family fundraiser

There will be a fundraiser for the family of Kevin Juillerat, who suffered a major stroke at the end of August that left him with left side paralysis, on Oct. 21 at Don Victor’s Restaurant. It is located on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown from noon until 5 p.m.

Juillerat lives in Austintown and has been Parts Manager at Greenwood Chevrolet for four of the 20 years he has been employed there.

Dinner tickets cost $25 per person (available at the cashier window or see Teri Simon) and include a choice of meal (Mexican or American), and the chance to win one of four grand prizes, in addition to a number of items at the Chinese auction. Tickets come with 26 Chinese auction tickets. Grand prizes include gift cards to the Seneca Alleghany Casino and Hotel, a 32-inch flat-screen television and more.

Boardman church hosts Trunk or Treat

Valley children can get a jump-start on Halloween by collecting all kinds of goodies during a free Trunk or Treat event at Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, on Oct. 27 from 3 to 5 p.m.

The church is located on Route 224 across from the Giant Eagle Get-Go. The family-friendly event will feature candy, games and hayrides.

Church members, dressed in costumes, will decorate their cars and hand out candy to children. Those attending can also learn more about the church’s ministries, as well as its upcoming live nativity, Journey to Bethlehem, scheduled for Dec. 15 (1-4 p.m.).

Mom and son event at Boardman Park

Boardman Park will be hosting its “Mom and Son Date Knight” on Nov. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lariccia Family Community Center. There will be food, dancing, crafts and posing for a professional photo as a keepsake. The boys (ages 3-8) are welcome to dress as their favorite hero or in nice dress attire. Tickets are on sale at the park office, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., cash or check only.

Church rummage sale to be Oct. 27

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4470 Norquest Blvd., Austintown, will be hosting a rummage sale in the school cafeteria on Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Food and refreshments, provided by the Knights of Columbus, will be available for sale at the main entrance of the school.

Pork-kraut dinner is Sunday

The Youngstown Saxon Club will be hosting its next pork-kraut dinner on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The cost is $8.75 for adults and $5 for children. The price includes dessert and beverage as well as the meal. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

Night of the Living Lubie set

Austintown Quaker Steak and Lube is hosting “Night of the Living Lubie” on Thursday from 7-10 p.m. to benefit breast cancer awareness. Guest appearances will be made by Mistress Vivian and her Minions and DJ Hairy George.

Robotics team hosts pancake breakfast

Austintown Robotics is sponsoring a pancake breakfast fundraiser at Austintown Middle School to raise money to build a robot and pay for the students to go to competitions. The breakfast will be today from 8-10:30 a.m. The cost is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and $3 for children under 10. They will be serving pancakes, sausage, bacon, milk, juice, coffee and tea.

AMS PTA annual craft show is Nov. 10

The Austintown Middle School PTA will host its 29th annual Craft Show on Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Vendor space is still available. Table rental is $40 per 8-foot table. Admission is free. There will be more than 200 crafters, food, a Chinese auction and more.

The Loghurst Farmhouse and Museum, located in Canfield on state Route 224, is hosting a Historic Wedding Gown Display starting today and continuing every Saturday and Sunday through Nov. 25 from 1-4 p.m. Wedding gowns from the Fowler family, local residents and Mahoning County Historical Society will be featured.

Roast beef dinner Oct. 21

The Kids Grieve Too organization at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner or Wick Avenue and Wood Street is hosting its 15th annual Roast Beef Dinner and Dessert tomorrow from 12-4 p.m. Kids Grieve Too is offered for children experiencing the loss of a significant other in their lives and is headed by Elaine Curran, a licensed Independent Social Worker.

O’Charley donates 10 percent

Diners at O’Charley’s Restaurants can use a coupon printed from Meridian Community Care’s website to enable 10 percent of the check to go toward Meridian’s PANDA Leaders Club in local schools and prevention programs for kids in the community. Archery Friends and Family Day is today

Today, there will be a Friends and Family Day supporting On Target Outfitters from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 8281 Leffingwell Road, Canfield. The cost to participate is $10 per family and there will be 3-D archery, air rifle shooting, trap shooting, fishing (bring your own pole), tomahawk shooting and more. Girl Scouts team up with Goodwill

Goodwill and the Girl Scouts are teaming up for the Good Turn Day donation drive on Nov. 3. Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries’ donation centers in Austintown, Boardman, Calcutta, Liberty, Salem and Warren will be participating in the event, along with Girl Scouts in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Girl Scouts earn a patch by collecting re-saleable clothing and household items from friends, family and neighbors, and then donating these items to one of the participating donation centers on Good Turn Day. Girl Scouts are asked to donate three bags to earn their patch.

Local church to host buffet

Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman, is planning its semi-annual International Buffet Oct. 27. There will be seatings at 4 and 6 p.m. The cost will be $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 are admitted free. The dinner includes food and desserts from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Sweden. Proceeds will used for community outreach and the support of Bethel’s ministry.

Meet Greg Miller at the farm

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “The Big Year” on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Greg Miller, movie consultant for the film “The Big Year,” will entertain the audience with stories from the year he traveled 130,000 miles and saw more than 700 bird species. YMCA need vendors

The Davis Family YMCA is putting out a call for vendors for its annual Afternoon of the Arts on Oct. 27, from 12-4 p.m. The event will include a craft show, art exhibit, artists at work, kids’ crafts, live performances, music, poetry reading, and light refreshments. Public labyrinth walk is tomorrow

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will offer the final guided walk of the season tomorrow from 2-3 p.m. and celebrate the Journey of Autumn and marking the Feast of St. Ursula, for whom the Ursuline Sisters are named. Anyone wishing to walk the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the official walks can come anytime at their own convenience.

There are guides provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need.

The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the Labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking.

Kids in grades K-5 can experience the voting process during regular library hours from Oct. 27 to Nov. 10. Cast your ballot for one of five nominated books and get a small prize. Grades K-2 and grades 3-5 have separate ballots. The Buckeye Children’s Book Award is an annual kids’ choice award, which began in 1981. Enter a contest during regular business hours at any library in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system to win four tickets for the Oct. 27 performance at the Covelli Centre at 1 or 3 p.m. Contest runs through Oct. 13. Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest 2012

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who was lost to cancer. To honor Danielle, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahonin County is sponsoring the fourth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest. This year, to correspond with Teen Read week author Rick Yancey and his Monstrumologist series and in keeping with the 2012 Teen Read week theme of “It Came From the Library”, poems entered should have a horror-related theme: monsters, the supernatural, the gothic and so on. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.teenxtremeonline.org/submityourwork.cfm or on standard 8 Ω” x 11” paper (not to exceed two pages) to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, please select the writing type “Poem” and be sure to include your phone number. Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures for healthy living. The program will be hosted in St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. Friends of the Library meeting

The Austintown Friend of the Library meeting will be on Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. and featuring a program titled “Saluting the military” where the Austintown Friends will salute those who serve our country in the American Armed Services both present and past. Howard B. Friend, Poland resident and educator in the Youngstown area, will present a vivid tale of World War II which he titled, “War Is the Rage of Hell.” He will focus on the Battle of the Bulge (December 1944-January 1945), one of the greatest battles in military history. Serving as an infantry machine gunner in the 3rd Army under General George Patton, Friend was seriously wounded. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star for meritorious action against the enemy. Friend will tell about his battle experiences and lengthy recuperation from injuries.

Native American display

The Austintown library will be hosting a Native American life display and presentation by the Pipe Family on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. This program is part of the Youngstown State University Diversity program series.

Holiday closing

All public libraries in Mahoning County will be closed on Nov. 22 for Thanksgiving.

Disney fundraising party

Princesses and Princes from preschool to grade 3 are invited to dress up as their favorite Disney princess or prince and join the fun at the Disney Prince and Princess Party at the Austintown library on Nov. 10 at 9 a.m. Refreshments will be served, compliments of the Friends of PLYMC. Admission is $10 per child. Each child must be accompanied by an adult, but adult is admitted free. Admission includes a free voucher to the “Disney on Ice: Treasure Trove” presentation at the Covelli Centre. The first 100 reservations will be accepted.
