Anthony Stratis crowned Homecoming King

Local Canfield High School alum Anthony Stratis, was announced as the Homecoming King of the University of Akron on Oct. 5. Anthony Stratis, the son of Dimitrios and Patricia Stratis, of Canfield, is a senior studying a double major in Political Science and Nursing with minors in philosophy and law. Stratis was nominated by The National Society of Leadership and Success. To be considered for king, there must be a combination of not only student voting, but a presentation of why you should be king. Stratis gave his presentation on service and leadership.

Rotary to host clothing drive

Canfield Rotary will be accepting clean, used clothing donations for its “Poorest of the Poor” clothing drive on Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. until noon. Clean, used clothing donations can be dropped off at Canfield Village Middle School, 100 Wadsworth Street. Rotarians and Interact students from Canfield High School will also be available during that time to pick-up bags and boxes from houses within the city and township limits. Boardman church hosts Trunk or Treat

Valley children can get a jump-start on Halloween by collecting all kinds of goodies during a free Trunk or Treat event at Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, on Oct. 27 from 3 to 5 p.m.

The church is located on Route 224 across from the Giant Eagle Get-Go. The family-friendly event will feature candy, games and hayrides.

Church members, dressed in costumes, will decorate their cars and hand out candy to children. Those attending can also learn more about the church’s ministries, as well as its upcoming live nativity, Journey to Bethlehem, scheduled for Dec. 15 (1-4 p.m.).

Roast beef dinner

The Kids Grieve Too organization at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner or Wick Avenue and Wood Street is hosting its 15th annual Roast Beef Dinner and Dessert tomorrow from 12-4 p.m. Kids Grieve Too is offered for children experiencing the loss of a significant other in their lives and is headed by Elaine Curran, a licensed Independent Social Worker.

Fall auction to be Nov. 3

The 10th annual St. Michael Scholarship Fund fall auction will be Nov. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Family Life Center. The cost is $10 per person (21 and older only) at the door and includes fall food, bar and a bidding number. Halloween costumes are encouraged. CH Campbell collecting winter clothing

CH Campbell School is collecting clean, reusable coats, sweaters, jackets, scarves and gloves to be donated to the Rescue Mission to keep communities warm this winter. New Canfield production

Ticket reservations are now available for the upcoming Canfield Players production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” The show will be performed Nov. 9, 10, 16 and 17 in the Canfield High School auditorium at 7 p.m. Tickets for adults and senior citizens are $12 and tickets for students are $10. Today, there will be a Friends and Family Day supporting On Target Outfitters from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 8281 Leffingwell Road, Canfield. The cost to participate is $10 per family and there will be 3-D archery, air rifle shooting, trap shooting, fishing (bring your own pole), tomahawk shooting and more. Food will be available to purchase.

Dairy Queen pumpkin hunt

There will be a free pumpkin hunt for children ages 2-9 at the Dairy Queen in Austintown, 146 N. Canfield Niles Road, today at noon and on Oct. 27 at the Dairy Queen location in Cornersburg, 3555 S. Meridian Road. There will be a costume contest and the option to decorate a pumpkin free with any Dairy Queen purchase.

Kevin Juillerat family fundraiser

There will be a fundraiser for the family of Kevin Juillerat, who suffered a major stroke at the end of August that left him with left side paralysis, on Oct. 21 at Don Victor’s Restaurant. It is located on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown from noon until 5 p.m.

Juillerat lives in Austintown and has been Parts Manager at Greenwood Chevrolet for four of the 20 years he has been employed there.

Dinner tickets cost $25 per person (available at the cashier window or see Teri Simon) and include a choice of meal (Mexican or American), and the chance to win one of four grand prizes, in addition to a number of items at the Chinese auction.

Tickets come with 26 Chinese auction tickets. Grand prizes include gift cards to the Seneca Alleghany Casino and Hotel, a 32-inch flat-screen television and more.

Mom and son event at Boardman Park

Boardman Park will be hosting its “Mom and Son Date Knight” on Nov. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lariccia Family Community Center.

There will be food, dancing, crafts and posing for a professional photo as a keepsake. The boys (ages 3-8) are welcome to dress as their favorite hero or in nice dress attire.

Tickets are on sale at the park office, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., cash or check only.

The cost for Boardman residents is $15 per couple and $5 per additional child. Non-residents pay $18 per couple and $5 per additional child. No phone reservations.

Pork-kraut dinner is Sunday

The Youngstown Saxon Club will be hosting its next pork-kraut dinner on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The cost is $8.75 for adults and $5 for children. The price includes dessert and beverage as well as the meal. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

View historic wedding gowns

The Loghurst Farmhouse and Museum, located in Canfield on state Route 224, is hosting a Historic Wedding Gown Display starting today and continuing every Saturday and Sunday through Nov. 25 from 1-4 p.m. Wedding gowns from the Fowler family, local residents and Mahoning County Historical Society will be featured.

O’Charley donates 10 percent

Diners at O’Charley’s Restaurants can use a coupon printed from Meridian Community Care’s website to enable 10 percent of the check to go toward Meridian’s PANDA Leaders Club in local schools and prevention programs for kids in the community. The coupon must be used on Tuesdays from 4-9 p.m. at the Boardman or Niles O’Charley’s throughout October only. Both locations have extra coupons available upon request.

Girl Scouts team up with Goodwill

Goodwill and the Girl Scouts are teaming up for the Good Turn Day donation drive on Nov. 3. Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries’ donation centers in Austintown, Boardman, Calcutta, Liberty, Salem and Warren will be participating in the event, along with Girl Scouts in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Girl Scouts earn a patch by collecting re-saleable clothing and household items from friends, family and neighbors, and then donating these items to one of the participating donation centers on Good Turn Day. Girl Scouts are asked to donate three bags to earn their patch.

Meet Greg Miller at the farm

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “The Big Year” on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Greg Miller, movie consultant for the film “The Big Year,” will entertain the audience with stories from the year he traveled 130,000 miles and saw more than 700 bird species. YMCA need vendors

The Davis Family YMCA is putting out a call for vendors for its annual Afternoon of the Arts on Oct. 27, from 12-4 p.m. The event will include a craft show, art exhibit, artists at work, kids’ crafts, live performances, music, poetry reading, and light refreshments. Local church to host buffet

Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman, is planning its semi-annual International Buffet Oct. 27. There will be seatings at 4 and 6 p.m. The cost will be $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 are admitted free. Public labyrinth walk is tomorrow

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will offer the final guided walk of the season tomorrow from 2-3 p.m. and celebrate the Journey of Autumn and marking the Feast of St. Ursula, for whom the Ursuline Sisters are named. Anyone wishing to walk the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the official walks can come anytime at their own convenience.

There are guides provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need.

The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the Labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking.

The Teen Advisory Board will select the grossest of the gross entries and the winners will receive autographed copies of ”The Monstrumologist” by Rick Yancey. For teens in grades 7-12.

Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest 2012

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who was lost to cancer. To honor Danielle, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the fourth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest.

This year, to correspond with Teen Read Week, author Rick Yancey and his Monstrumologist series and in keeping with the 2012 Teen Read week theme of “It Came From the Library”, poems entered should have a horror-related theme: monsters, the supernatural, the gothic and so on. Entries may be submitted online at www.teenxtremeonline.org/submityourwork.cfm or on standard 8 Ω” x 11” paper (not to exceed two pages) to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type “Poem” and be sure to include a phone number. Hard copies must be typed and be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Teen choice awards set

The library will be hosting its own teen choice awards where teens in grades 7-12 can vote on who’s the hottest singer, what stars shouldn’t be famous, what piece of tech accessory you can’t live without, and more during regular hours throughout the month of October.
