Jameson Hospital — in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Northwest Pennsylvania Tobacco Control Program — is offering a free, six-session quit-smoking program. The first session begins Nov. 6.

The program series consists of six, one-hour sessions Nov. 13, Nov. 20, Nov. 27, Nov. 29 and Dec. 4 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Jameson Hospital South Campus, 1000 S. Mercer St., in the administrative conference room on the first floor.

Seeking donations

The Newton Falls Community Pantry needs help to keep providing food boxes, once a month, to those in need and the holiday dinners coming up.

Donations are the about the only funding the pantry receives. It used to give food to 75 to 130 people per month but that number has risen to 200 to 285, at times.

Any individuals, church groups, clubs or organizations that want to do a fund raiser are encourage. All donations help.

Blood analysis program

The Warren SCOPE Center, 220 W. Market St., is hosting the Warren Rotary’s semiannual blood analysis program from 7 to 10 a.m. Oct. 27. It takes about 15 minutes per person.

Requirements include fasting for 12 hours before testing and no consumption of alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before testing. The fee is $36 per person.

Fashion show, expo

The Jameson Health Care Foundation will celebrate the third annual Paint the Town Pink: JHS Fashion Show & Women’s Expo on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at The New Englander Banquet Center in New Castle.

The annual event has a mission to spread awareness to prevent and most effectively treat breast cancer. The free event starts at 1 p.m.

NICU reunion planned

Akron Children’s Hospital is having a reunion for all patients and their families, who have spent time in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit or one of its special care nurseries.

The 2012 NICU reunion is Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Summit County Fairgrounds in Tallmadge. The event is free but registration is required.

Hospitals join network

West Penn Allegheny Health System officials have announced the system’s five member hospitals have joined the Pennsylvania Hospital Engagement Network, a new two-year patient-safety initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The Pennsylvania Hospital Engagement Network, one of only 26 such networks in the nation, is a component of the HHS Partnership for Patients initiative to achieve goals of reducing preventable hospital-acquired conditions, re-admissions, and complications during hospitalization.

Shots distributed

MERCER, PA.

The Mercer County Pandemic Committee conducted a point of dispensing drill at three locations in Mercer County last Saturday, distributing more than 800 flu shots and nearly 100 pneumonia shots in less than three hours.

Dispensing locations were at Grove City Middle School, Greenville Area High School and Hermitage Artman Elementary School and volunteer staff began inoculating residents at about 8:30 a.m. with the free shots. Shortly after 11 a.m. all three sites had exhausted their flu shots, resulting in an early closure.

Awards luncheon

Sharon Regional Health System hosted its annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon on Oct. 3 at The Casino in Buhl Farm Park.

Debbie Garrett, hospice director, presented the Hospice Volunteer Service Awards to Rita Brown, Peggy Fiedler, Gayle Linden, Bud Nier, Maxie Phillips and Sandy Yarian for 10 years and Gracie Knapp for 15 years.

Lynn Pyle, director of volunteers, presented the Janet L. Patterson Award for Volunteer of the Year to Angie Leonard. The award is presented to the volunteer who exemplifies the enthusiasm, service and dedication to the volunteer program at Sharon Regional Health System.
