Meningitis cases in Ohio rise to 9
Health officials added two more Ohioans to the list of Americans harmed by tainted medications sold by a Massachusetts company, and the officials began working with doctors who used any of the company’s products to make sure they contact their patients.
In Ohio, 64 practices have bought products from the New England Compounding Center since May. Previously, only four Ohio practices were alerted, because they’d bought the products specifically linked to fungal meningitis and strokes.
Now, experts are cautioning that care should be taken with patients treated with anything made by the company, which is closed and under scrutiny for its role in an outbreak that had killed 19 and sickened at least 247, including nine Ohioans, as of Wednesday.
The two new Ohio cases involve a 62-year-old woman in Marion County and a 52-year-old Warren County man.
Expletive mistakenly tied to Dalai Lama
PROVIDENCE, R.I.
The Dalai Lama didn’t curse at a Brown University event, the college swears — even if the closed captioning said differently.
A closing comment Wednesday by the Dalai Lama was mistaken for a profanity by the person transcribing his remarks for closed captioning at a speech on peace.
The exiled Tibetan leader urged listeners to share his thoughts with others if they found them interesting. If not, he said, they could “forget.”
The closed captioning on a large screen at the Rhode Island Convention Center transcribed the remark as an expletive.
A Brown spokeswoman confirmed the Dalai Lama said “forget” and said the closed captioning that appeared was an error.
Trial date set in Trayvon Martin case
SANFORD, Fla.
A judge set a tentative trial date next year for a neighborhood watch volunteer charged with fatally shooting Trayvon Martin.
In her first hearing since taking over the case, Judge Debra S. Nelson said June 10 would be the start of George Zimmerman’s trial, though the date could change as both sides get prepared for what is expected to be a three-week trial.
Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the February shooting of the unarmed 17-year-old Martin. Zimmerman claims he was attacked and the shooting was self-defense.
Zimmerman’s defense team tweeted after the hearing that they likely will ask for a “stand your ground” hearing in April or May.
