1793: During the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette, the queen of France, is beheaded.
1859: Radical abolitionist John Brown leads a group of 21 men in a raid on Harpers Ferry in western Virginia. (Ten of Brown’s men are killed and five escape. Brown and six followers end up being captured; all were executed.)
1901: Booker T. Washington dines at the White House as the guest of President Theodore Roosevelt, whose invitation to the black educator sparks controversy.
1912: The Boston Red Sox win the World Series, defeating the New York Giants in Game 8, 3-2 (Game 2 had ended in a tie on account of darkness).
1972: A twin-engine plane carrying U.S. House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, D-La., and U.S. Rep. Nick Begich, D-Alaska, disappears while flying over a remote region of Alaska; the aircraft is never found.
1978: The College of Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church chooses Cardinal Karol Wojtyla to be the new pope; he takes the name John Paul II.

1987: Dr. Fredric D’Amato resigns as chairman of the Youngstown Park and Recreation Board after being outvoted by the board, which will pursue a state takeover of Lake Milton.
Ohio Bancorp, parent of the Dollar Savings & Trust Co. in Youngstown, reports another solid earnings performance, reporting earnings of $3.36 million for the third quarter.
1972: The Youngstown district has six weekend traffic fatalities, including three youths killed in a two-car crash in front of 3123 Hudson Ave. Dead are Edward Quick, 18; Gregory Tomidajewicz, 15, and Lee Lucas, 18.
A military investigating board is meeting at the U.S. Air Force base at Youngstown Municipal Airport to determine what caused a jet fighter from the base to crash near Erie, Pa., killing Capt. Thomas M. Pytl, 28, the pilot, and Maj. Michael C. Freeman, the copilot.
1962: Two construction workers are killed and eight others injured when a platform collapses during the relining of the No. 2 blast furnace at the Roemer Works of Sharon Steel Corp. Dead are Gardner Birch, 52, of Hickory Township and Graham Matthews, 43, of Sharon.
The Mahoning County Welfare Department will begin issuing food vouchers instead of cash to some 8,000 relief clients because the agency has run out of funds.
1937: Atty. Nathan M. Kaufman, counsel for five men arrested in a Youngstown police crackdown on the numbers game, says they were arrested illegally, without search warrants. He demands a jury trial in Youngstown Municipal Court for his clients.
Youngstown Mayor Lionel Evans says he will oppose installation of trambuses on Poland Avenue unless the Youngstown Municipal Railway Co. improves service on Glenwood Avenue and the Steelton area beyond the Ohio Works.
