A toast-and-roast celebration for Judge Robert A. Douglas Jr., who retired last summer from Youngstown Municipal Court, is set for 7 p.m. Friday at the Maronite Center, 1555 S. Meridian Road. Wells, former ambassador to Gambia, West Africa, and a retired U.S. State Department executive.

For homeschoolers

SLIPPERY Rock, Pa.

Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, will host a “citizen science investigation” for homeschooling families with students 5 and older from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 31. It will introduce Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s BirdSleuth Science Investigator Kit for Homeschoolers and Project FeederWatch, a comprehensive, inquiry-based curriculum related to birds. Cost is $3 per person, with a maximum per family of $12. Enrollment is limited. Winter gardening

CANFIELD

Ohio State University Extension Gardening Adventure Series continues Tuesday with a program on soils, growing herbs indoors and hydrangeas in McMahon Hall, Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, state Route 46. Sessions focus on continuing gardening through winter and preparing for the 2013 growing season. Early registration is encouraged. Cost is $15. Registration at the door begins at 5:30 p.m.
