Mental illness walk

YOUNGSTOWN

Hundreds of Mahoning Valley residents will unite to shed light on the stigma surrounding mental illnesses when they gather today at Mill Creek Park for the 2012 Mahoning Valley Out of the Darkness community walk.

Registration is at 9 a.m. at the Wick Recreation Area; opening ceremonies are at 10 a.m.

This third annual fund-raising event supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by helping provide local and national suicide prevention and awareness programs. It is one of nearly 250 community walks nationwide through December in which some 80,000 walkers are expected to raise $5 million for suicide-prevention efforts.

Organizer Amy Neral said the walk will raise money to fund research and prevention programs here and nationwide.
