Haggerty, Lee to vie for state tourney berths

Warren JFK’s Lauren Lee and Cardinal Mooney’s Kacy Haggerty will play for the right to go to the state tournament in today’s district singles finals.

Friday at Harvard Park, Lee and Haggerty won their first match but lost their second.

Six singles players will advance to state. Four of them are Laurel’s Danielle Buchinisky, Rocky River’s Isabel Quinones, Hathaway Brown’s Ariana Iranpour and Beachwood’s Anna Pietsch. They will play in the semifinals and first-place matches.

Lee defeated Hawken’s Nayana Ravishankar by scores of 3-6, 6-4 and 6-0. Lee then was defeated by Quinones, 6-1, 6-2.

Haggerty defeated Akron Hoban’s Anne Kramer, 6-1, 6-0. The Cardinal then lost to Pietsch by scores of 7-6, 6-1.

Today, Lee will play Orange’s Adrian Young while Haggerty will play St. Thomas Aquinas’ Neya Sterling. The winners will advance.

Two other Mooney players were eliminated on Friday. Gianna Reider lost to Young (6-0, 6-1) while Hallie Perin lost to Sterling (6-0, 7-5).
