Gunshot fired into office for Obama
WASHINGTON
Denver police say someone fired a shot through the window of President Barack Obama’s Denver campaign office Friday.
Police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez says people were inside the office when the shooting happened Friday afternoon, but no one was injured. A large panel of glass was left shattered at the office on West Ninth Avenue near Acoma Street.
Lopez says investigators are looking at surveillance video but have not yet confirmed a description of a vehicle that might be linked to the shooting. Police didn’t immediately release other details while detectives pursue leads.
EU awarded Nobel Peace Prize
BRUSSELS
The European Commission president had no reason to expect anything but another bad day. Then, out of the blue, after three years of back-biting and seemingly daily financial crisis, the European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize for fostering peace on a continent long ravaged by war.
It was a badly needed morale boost for a 60-year-old union in the midst of a midlife crisis.
Even as it announced the award Friday, the Norwegian prize jury warned that the financial crisis challenging the 27-nation bloc’s unity could lead to a return to “extremism and nationalism.” It urged Europeans to remember the EU’s role in building peace and reconciliation among enemies who fought Europe’s bloodiest wars, even as they tackle the economic crisis.
Body is ID’d as that of missing Colo. girl
WESTMINSTER, Colo.
A body found in a suburban Denver park was identified Friday as that of a missing 10-year-old girl, as anxious parents kept close watch over their children because of the potential presence of a predator in their midst, authorities said.
The body of Jessica Ridgeway was found Wednesday about seven miles southwest of her home. Authorities said it was not intact, and DNA was used to identify her.
Jessica began a short walk from her home to Witt Elementary School on the morning of Oct. 5 but never arrived. A massive search by hundreds of law enforcement officers did not start until hours later because Jessica’s mother works nights and slept through a call from school officials saying Jessica wasn’t there.
Ind. doctor nabbed in Italy gets 7 years
HAMMOND, Ind.
A former Indiana surgeon arrested on a snowy Italian mountainside after five years on the run was handed a stiff prison term Friday for billing insurers and patients for procedures he didn’t perform, with the federal judge saying he used patients like an ATM machine.
Mark Weinberger was given a seven-year prison term, nearly double the recommendation under federal sentencing guidelines. U.S. District Judge Philip Simon said the more-severe sentence was necessary because Weinberger — who disappeared just before he was charged — left a web of lawsuitsfor his 40 employees and health issues for patients.
67 years late, WWII vet receives medals
SPRINGFIELD, Pa.
An 86-year-old military veteran from suburban Philadelphia has belatedly received several medals earned for his service in World War II. The Bronze Star and Purple Heart were among the nine medals awarded to Montraville “Monty” Lybrand on Friday.
As an infantryman, he suffered shrapnel wounds to his chest during the 1945 invasion of Okinawa.
