Toddlers and their parents laughed and played together while improving literacy skills during “Baby Brilliant” at Boardman library Sept. 10.

The event, which was geared toward children between the ages of 4 and 5, turned reading into an interesting adventure for children and parents alike.

“It’s a learning experience. The books we choose are tailored toward each specific age group. We did a finger play using a magnetic board where they did rhyming, which helps them hear words and identify them. The parents are aware of what we do and they reinforce it at home. It’s also good for children to work with other children before preschool,” said Children’s Librarian Karen Saunders.

The event made learning an interactive experience for children. Participants laughed as they identified colors and shapes. There was even an opportunity for children to discuss characters and events as Saunders read several stories. Parents also enjoyed themselves as they learned techniques to use at home. Lydia Bushling was just as enthusiastic as her children while they enjoyed arts and crafts.

“I think you have to start early to instill the love of reading or they won’t love it. It also helps them with their imagination. My children love it and they love to interact and do the crafts,” Bushling said.
