Poland frosh shut out Howland

The Poland freshman football team dominated in all facets of the game, beating Howland 42-0 last week.

Tyler Smith, Matt Duran and Jacob Fredrick had big performances on defense, along with Dave Esarco, who scooped up a Howland fumble and ran 70 yards for a score.

Kicker Joe Shields and the kickoff team recovered three onside kicks on the day and Shields was 6-for-6 on PATs.

Dylan Garver scored three rushing TDs and another one on a trick-play — a pass from quarterback Nick Bucceri to Tyler Smith, who pitched to Garver for the score. The other Poland score came on an 80-yard TD reception from Bucceri to Smith.

PMS seventh-graders tie Tigers, 8-8

The Poland Middle School seventh-grade football team tied Howland 8-8. The Bulldogs were driving and got into scoring position for the go-ahead score when the referees called the game at the start of the fourth quarter because of darkness.

The eighth-grade squad lost to the Tigers 20-16. The Poland JV team narrowly lost last Saturday to Howland by a score of 22-21.

Little Bulldogs prep for playoffs

The Poland Little Bulldogs 120-pound team finished the regular season by defeating the Austintown Colts 8-0 in overtime last weekend.

After a bye this weekend, the Bulldogs (7-1, 3-1 American Conference) will face the Colts again on Oct. 21 in the second round of the YAC playoffs.

The Poland 100-pounders lost to the Colts 30-0 last weekend to finish the regular season. The team (3-5, 0-4) will play tomorrow at Mathews against Howland in the first round of the playoffs.

The 140-pound squad ended the regular season with a 22-0 loss to the Colts. Poland (4-4, 1-3) will play the Colts again Oct. 21 in the second round of the postseason.
