The Canfield Hockey Boosters sponsored its first Canfield Sports and Club Dinner Auction at St. Michael’s Parish Hall on Sept. 22. The dinner auction was a fundraiser for the booster club and was billed as an ongoing show of support toward students’ extracurricular endeavors for all who wished to participate.

According to Barry Tancer, Canfield Hockey Boosters president, the club’s fundraiser offered all Canfield clubs and sports teams the opportunity to participate in the event.

“If a group was interested in donating an item to our silent auction, that’s pretty much all they had to do. The Canfield Hockey Boosters provided this venue for the event, giving all Canfield sports teams and clubs the chance to donate an item with an 80 percent return on what the item was auctioned for here tonight.

“Each high school sports team or club boosters is allowed to hold two fundraisers a year. If a group donates to our auction, it does not count as one of their fundraisers, so it’s a good deal for them. It is a very good opportunity for boosters organizations to get an extra fundraiser,” Tancer said.

Several items were donated to the silent auction for attendees to bid on throughout the evening. A live auction was also held with the help of Paul Basinger, of Basinger Auction Service, who donated his services.

Silent auction donations included the Dine Around Town package, which consisted of gift cards from Quaker Steak and Lube, Chili’s, Carrabas, Stonebridge and Blue Wolf Tavern, the Pamper Your Pet donated by Wags and Wiggles, which included Wags and Wiggles products, travel mug, dog biscuits and treats plus a gift certificate for Southmill Vets, the Keep it Clean package donated by Canfield Auto Spa which included 15 car wash tokens, a ladies Bulova watch donated by Komara Jewelers, and a “For the Volleyball Enthusiast” basket donated by the CHS Volleyball Boosters, which included a gear bag with a ball and volleyball apparel.

The live auction offered 15 items, including an opportunity for a Canfield Village Middle School student to be principal for a day, donated by CVMS Principal Traci Hostetler, a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4x4 and a 1998 Mercedes Benz SL500 donated by Maroun’s Motors, a Bowflex Blaze Machine donated by Michael Bruno, a dry cleaning certificate donated by Steve Weiss of LaFrance Cleaners, handmade, hand-painted cornhole games made and donated by John Fernstrom and the Canfield Fire Department donated the opportunity for a bidder to be a Fireman for a Day.

Dr. John Clendenin, treasurer of the Canfield Hockey Boosters and head of the dinner auction committee, said the boosters plan to make the dinner auction an annual event.

“We hope to build this event up each year. With this being our first year, we have learned a lot and will use that to make the dinner auction better and better each year. We will start collecting donations for next year pretty much as soon as this one is over. We couldn’t do it without the generous donations of the community,” Clendenin said.

Joining Clendenin on the dinner auction committee were Tancer, Atty. Robert Rusu, Tom Drotleff and Julie Cerneka.

“Hockey is an expensive sport. Our team and boosters rely 100 percent on fundraising and fees the players must pay. All money raised here tonight goes straight to the team,” Clendenin said.

Showing his support of the event, Superintendent Alex Geordan was in attendance.

“This is a great event. I am happy to lend my support,” Geordan said.

Members of the Canfield hockey teams were on hand to help with the dinner. Several players bussed tables and helped in the kitchen. Canfield hockey coach Randy Emery was also on-hand.

The Canfield Hockey Boosters will hold its second fundraiser at Diamondback Golf Course on Oct. 7. The golf outing is open to the public and foursomes are welcome to play. Hole sponsorships are also available. For more information, call Tancer at 330-507-7333.
