Boardman’s Mark Hadley raced to a first-place finish in a time of 16:08, outpacing 158 competitors, to lead the Spartans to their 10th consecutive Mahoning County cross country championship on Sept. 25 at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

The Spartans placed nine runners in the top 30 and swept the top five scoring spots. Following Hadley was classmate Alan Burns (second, 16:20) and freshman Nathan Hadley (fourth, 17:14). They were followed by sophomore Juan Santiago (fifth, 17:20), junior Justin Maroni (sixth, 17:27), senior Sam Sheronovich (12th, 17:50), freshman Adam Deeley (22nd, 18:27), junior Jacob Kelleck (29th, 18:41) and senior Ryan Key (30th, 18:45).

“We take a lot pride in being the best distance program in Mahoning County,” said Spartans head coach John Phillips. “Earning a scoring sweep was very impressive – no better way to win our 10th straight county title than that.”

Setting new personal bests at the challenging course at the fairgrounds were senior Paul Stevens (20:21), junior Jeff Bean (21:33), sophomore Brandon Rigelsky (20:30) and freshman Sean Allan (20:19).

This week’s BW3 ‘Runner of the Week’ award was given to junior Mark Hadley, who has not only earned his first individual county championship, but was named ‘Student Athlete of the Week’ by WKYC-TV in Cleveland and WYTV in Youngstown.

The team scores for the championship were Boardman (15), Canfield (54), Austintown Fitch (56), Struthers (135), West Branch (150), Jackson Milton (191), Poland (192), Springfield (240), Cardinal Mooney (283) and Western Reserve (308).
