AMS Red wins match

The Austintown Middle School Red volleyball team defeated Boardman Center Middle School 25-16, 25-7 on Sept. 27.

Girls soccer takes loss

Fitch’s girls soccer team was beaten by Canfield 5-0 on Monday. Fitch attempted three corner kicks, for a total of three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Jessica Scott saved seven of the 12 shots she faced. The junior varsity team was defeated by Canfield 2-1.

Volleyball beats Niles

The Fitch varsity volleyball team defeated Niles 25-10, 25-9, 25-16 on Sept. 27. The leading server was Sarah Melfe with six aces and a total of 14 points. Melfe was also the leading attacker with 13 attempts and seven kills. Leading setter, Tiffany Rapovy, had nine attempts and eight assists. The leading defender was Gabi Gessler with three serve receptions and eight digs. Leading blockers were Gabi Gessler and Taylor Herman with one block each.

AMS Red eighth-grade bounces back

The Austintown Middle School Red eighth-grade volleyball team lost to Struthers 25-18, 25-21 on Sept. 24. However, they returned from this defeat at the Sept. 26 match against Boardman Glenwood with a victory of 25-17, 25-17.

Fitch loses to Howland

The Fitch girls soccer team was defeated by Howland 2-0 on Sept. 26. Austintown attempted two shots at Howland’s goal, including on corner kick. Fitch goalkeeper, Jessica Scott, had eight saves. The varsity team’s record is now 6-5-2 for the season. The junior varsity team tied Howland 0-0.

Boys golf defeats Struthers

The Austintown boys golf team defeated Struthers 170-181 on Sept. 26 at the Knoll Run golf course. Leading the team were Dom Ignazio (39), Joey Shushok (41), Matt Matasy (43) and Vince Goleno (47). The team record is now 12-4 for the season and 10-4 in the league.

Boys golf beats Beaver Local

The Fitch boys golf team defeated Beaver Local 167-198 on Sept. 25 at the Deer Creek golf course. Leading the Fitch team were Matt Matasy (36), Cameron Gumble (43), Vince Goleno (44) and Joey Shushok (44).

Youngstown Orthopaedic Saturday sports clinic

Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates’ Saturday sports clinics, geared specifically to fall sports student-athletes in need of immediate attention to sports injuries, is underway. The clinics run from 9-11 a.m. every Saturday throughout the high school sports season.

These clinics are open to players involved in football, volleyball, soccer, golf and other high school and college sports. They are held at the practice’s Building A at the northwest corner of Tippecanoe Road and Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. More information is available at www.youngstownortho.com.
