120-pound JVs tie Austintown Colts
The Canfield Little Cardinals 120-pound JV squad battled the Austintown Colts to a 6-6 tie Sept. 25 in Canfield. Canfield (3-1-2) took its opening possession deep into Colts territory, but came up short when a fourth-down pass was picked off. The Colts answered back by driving 80 yards for a 6-0 lead. Pat Guerrierri stuffed the conversion try for the Cardinals. The second half began with each team unable to move as a steady rain began to fall. The Cardinals finally got on track in the fourth quarter behind the tough running of Luke Holland and Andrew Morchak. Holland blasted down to the one and Logan Torok took it over right tackle to tie the score at 6-all. Canfield’s conversion try fell inches short.
Canfield’s defense was led by Brent Herrman, Alex George, Nick Cavoulas, Luke Morrell, Jeff Shaughnessy, AJ Wise, Micheal Crawford, Paolo Papalia and Evan Beistel. Offensively, Brennan Beil, Daniel Gibson, Robbie Coonce, CJ Mcfall, Joey Warren, Race Mingus , Chase Lowry,Nathan Fiorenza, and Conor Hritz were standouts.
100s JV squad wins on final play
The Canfield JV 100-pound team improved to 4-1 on the season after defeating the Austintown Colts 14-8.
The Colts took an early lead right out the gate with a long TD and conversion to make it 8-0. The Cardinals then got a long scoring run by Nate Myers and a conversion run by Landon Beidelschies to tie the game before the half 8-8.
The defense was the key in second half as the Cards shut down the Colts. As time was running out in the game, Nate Myers was able to scamper for a 30-yard score to win the game with no time left.
Philip McLaughlin, Dom Marzano, Landon Beidelscheis, Antonio Gonzales, Lorenzo Rohrbaugh, Chris DeDonato and Ethan Remby were defensive standouts. The offense was powered by Nick Smyczynski, Philip McLaughlin, Nate Myers and Landon Beidleschies.
Canfield dominates in Super Bowl rematch
In a rematch of the 2011 YAC Super Bowl, the Canfield Little Cards 140-pounders battled Howland last weekend and earned a dominating 52-14 victory. The Cards beat the Togers 6-0 in last year’s title game.
Canfield took the first possession right down the field and Vinny Fiorenza scored from one yard out. Canfield’s defense spent a lot of time in the Tiger backfield. Howland only crossed the 50-yard line once in the first three quarters.
Tyler Stein took a Tigers fumble and Canfield started at the Howland 33. Four plays later, Glenn Griswold scored.
Another four and out by Howland gave Canfield the ball at the Howland 38, where Paul Brienz scored to add to the Cards’ lead.
PJ Hallof recovered a Howland fumble on the Tigers’ 30. Nick Crawford scored from 15 yards out. Another four-and-out for Howland led to a 23-yard Paul French touchdown. Canfield led 38-0 at the half.
Howland’s second half started with a fumble recovered by Jacob Donadee. The Tigers held the Cards out of the end zone, but on their first play, Carter Myers snagged an interception on the Howland 24. Four plays later, Richie Herrera scored from the 10 and Ross Perry added the PAT.
In the fourth quarter, Howland got on the scoreboard with a couple big runs. Richie Herrera added Canfield’s final score with a 37-yard run.
The Cards will look to finish the regular season undefeated when they face the unbeaten Austintown Little Falcons. The YAC league playoffs will start the following weekend. The Super Bowl will be held Nov. 4 at Hickory High School in Hermitage, Pa.
Canfield 120s move to 7-0 with shutout
The Canfield Little Cardinals 120-pounders moved to 7-0 after shutting out the Howland Little Tigers 46-0 Sunday at Bob Dove Field.
Canfield’s defense posted its seventh straight shutout and Andre Crump erupted in the second quarter for 134 yards rushing and three touchdowns to ensure Canfield the top seed in the upcoming YAC playoffs.
Canfield’s first score came following a Santino Marucci interception when Jake Kowal raced three yards for a TD. Andre Crump added the conversion for 8-0 Canfield lead.
Canfield put the game away in the second quarter when Crump reached pay dirt three times (53 yards, 22, 50). Marucci, Ethan Fletcher and Mario Mavar, on a toss from Fletcher, added conversions for the Cards as they raced out to a 32-0 halftime lead.
Canfield took the opening drive of the second half and drove 65 yards in eight plays, mainly behind the hard running of Fletcher, who blasted the final five yards for the touchdown. The conversion made it 40-0. Canfield rounded out the scoring when Kowal picked off a Tigers aerial and dashed 26 yards for the score.
Crump led all rushers with 146 yards on six carries, while Fletcher added 65 on seven tries and Marucci contributed 49 on seven attempts. Offensively, David Noday, Anthony Orr, Seth Hull, Angelo Cestone and Greg Karas were standouts.
The defense was led by Gavin Tareshawty, Peyton Kostelic, who had a fumble recovery, Michael Gonda, Mario Mavar, and Logan Torok.
Canfield looks to complete its second consecutive undefeated regular season when it travels to Austintown to take on the Little Falcons tomorrow.
