Youngstown man fatally shot in Ashtabula

Police retrieved numerous bullets and other evidence Monday afternoon from the west side home where a Youngstown man was fatally shot Saturday night, Chief Robert Stell told the Star Beacon of Ashtabula.

“We believe [the bullets] were involved in the incident,” he said, noting police executed a search warrant to get inside the residence at 918 W. 37th St.

Dawaun Davis, 22, of Youngstown, died of a single gunshot to the neck outside the house, said Richard Mongell, the Ashtabula County coroner’s chief investigator.

Police believe the incident started about 6 p.m. Saturday in front of the West 37th Street home, and it escalated into a violent altercation with gunshots being fired more than 20 times, according to police reports.

When police arrived Saturday night, they discovered Davis down on the ground with a fatal gunshot wound. Neighbors stood outside watching as law enforcement descended on the area.

The second gunman fled the scene, but didn’t get far, police said. He was on West 38th Street in front of Union Missionary Baptist Church, with bullet wounds to the leg and buttocks, police said.

Police are not releasing his name because the incident is still under investigation, Stell said.

He was hospitalized over the weekend in MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. He now is home from the hospital, sources said.

Davis, who reported Youngstown addresses on Summer Street and Fincastle Lane, was sentenced in November 2009 to two years’ probation after he pleaded guilty to a fourth- degree felony charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

In imposing that sentence, Judge R. Scott Krichbaum, of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, ordered Davis to complete the day-reporting program at the Community Corrections Association in Youngstown and gain and maintain employment.

In May 2010, the judge found that Davis violated terms of his probation, continued him on probation, but ordered him to complete CCA’s residential program.

In November 2010, Judge Krichbaum again found Davis to be in violation of his probation and sentenced him to a year in prison, with credit for 195 jail days already served.
